How do you dicover topics to blog about?

What methods do you use to discover great topics to write about that don't include surveying your list since I don't have one. Any and all replies would be appreciated.

Thanks

    1) Find your top competitors, and have a look at the content they are creating. Subscribe to their list and see what they are talking about. Obviously try to find successful competitors.

    2) Use search engines like youtube and do a broad keyword search and look at the suggestions that come up before pressing enter or search. Often times these are some of the hottest topics in a niche.

    3) Keyword searches can also give you some good ideas for content related to your search term, and once again these will be topics with a good amount of interest as it relates to your niche..

    4) One of my favorite methods is using facebook and pinterest. With some of the social networks you are able to see what content your competitors are putting out in their social marketing efforts. The beauty of this method is you can determine at a glance the popularity of their posts (shares, likes, etc.). What are people talking about or what questions are they asking on FB pages or groups?

    5) AnswerThePublic.com: that free visual keyword research & content ideas tool It's free, it's awesome, try it out. Enter any keyword and it will return popular questions that relate to that keyword or phrase.

    6) Search for niche specific hashtags.

    7) Check out forums related to your niche. These can be a gold mine of relevant content ideas as you can see what kind of activity is going on in each thread. So obviously the threads with tons of traffic would probably make for a desirable bit of content.

    8) I'm not sure of the niche you are in, but I will give an example here. Let's say you are in the Iphone niche, go to apple's support area or knowledge base (not an apple fan here) and look at the popular support questions, answers, categories, etc.

    9) This one is just a little out there but will certainly get you an intriguing headline if not the occasional content idea: https://www.portent.com/

    10) Yahoo answers, Aardvark, Answerbag, Wikianswers, and Quora. These site will give you an idea of common questions in your niche that can be put into a post like "Top 5 Most Frequent Problems With ____. You get the idea.

    11) Not sure if your niche has physical stuff or products that relate, but if so you can use sites like amazon and their autocomplete for popular associations for product reviews or content ideas.

I hope this will keep you in quality content ideas for years to come.

Best of Luck to Ya !

If it's applicable look at site search in your Google analytics. You can see what people are looking for on your site that you are currently not delivering.

One thing you can blog about is when you learn something from a webinar, PDF file, website, forum post, whatever, the first thing you should do to cement it in your own mind is to teach it by way of writing a blog! If you're actively involved in learning then you should be able to come up with a plethora of topics to write about.
    Hope this helps,

You know I did think of that. I'm learning a lot from books and other blogs and I thought I should just write something that pulls a lot of that material together and I can include my thoughts on it too. Thanks for the tip!

If you put a keyword into Google Search, a whole lot of keyword phrases/suggestions come up with it which gives you an idea of what searches people are putting in. And implementing those long tail keywords into your blog posts is also helpful for SEO purposes.

    If you are not already,

You should be reading the big blogs in your niche.

Along with the big players in social media, ie twitter, facebook, etc.

What are they writing about on a daily, and weekly basis?

How can you take what they are writing about, and put your of spin on it for your blog.

What questions do you see constantly in the big forum or forums on your niche.

Because if you see a question constantly asked on the forum, you can bet other people have that same question and this is something you should write about.

Lastly do not neglect go old fashioned review posts, buy some products in your niche--and really use them--and then review them.

But not just by saying these are great products--explain what you like about the product and what you do not like--really give a detailed review--trust me your readers will appreciate this.

    Hope this helps.

First of all, you should write a post about a topic that you would read yourself.

Next ask some friends if they would read about that.

Then google it to find best examples around that topic.

An finally write it down and share

The short answer is "find the pain, provide the solution". There are many great suggestions in other posts here.

One other thing you might do is look at what problems you have had or are you having right now. Do some research of your own and write a blog post of what you discover (in your own words).

The results will be targeted to your audience.

One other thing to remember, you don't have to know more than everybody else, you just have to know more than somebody.

I get a lot of information from Buzzsumo ( Find the Most Shared Content and Key Influencers). Enter the keywords of your choice. I also use PostPlanner to find out what business and marketing articles are popular on Facebook Twitter is also good for the same using a keyword search as in "affiliate marketing," etc.

Lots of awesome advice here already, but to add my own quick layer to this...

What's something that people are experiencing huge pain over... that you can easily write about on a continuous basis?

This is why (for example) weight loss, love/relationships/dating, and making money are such big industries... HUGE pain and wanting around those topics.

Is there something along those lines (or some other 'painful' line) that you can consistently write about? AND offer real value while you're doing it?

    IMHO, that's key.
