Hey folks! Quick question about social bookmarking. I'm doing the method (from XFactor's thread) where I find a niche with low competition but decent number of searches. I'm doing the article marketing. But I'm wanting to do some social bookmarking for the link boost. In the past, I've just used social bookmarking without hesitating. But because these are keywords where the competition is so low, it's fairly easy to get on the front page ...and I'm afraid that if i use social bookmarking with the same keyword, those sites will outrank mine. In other words, if my site is about blue plastic widgets, and I create blueplasticwidgets dot com, if I use socialmarker and create a bunch of bookmarks called "blue plastic widgets", the sites like digg and propeller will probably take over the top spots. I'd lose more than I'd gain. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Do you simply avoid putting the keyword phrase in the title of the bookmarks? But then, aren't you creating 'muddled' anchor texts to point to your site? |

Hey, I haven't got xfactors book yet though want it this month and with my limited knowledge I will offer my 2p worth. If you have the keywords and in your example of "blue plastic widgets" could you not just drop the "blue" bit for example. Basically can your keywords make sense if you just remove one of them or even possibly make your keywords in the articles a bit in the competitive market(up one level) so the backlinks are still built but you know it won't adversly effect your page? Maybe talking nonsense but kind of makes sense in my mind just wondering if it would be applicable to you keywords. Best wishes Pete |

But he wants to target specific anchor text in the backlink (the title of the bookmark). I don't know Xfactor or whoever that is, but I do the same thing - find keyword phrases with high searches/low results. If you do your kw research properly and it actually is a low competition keyphrase then you should be able to get your own site to the top above the bookmarking sites. The only times I get outranked by Digg is when the keyword is actually pretty competitive and there are a lot of authority sites relevant to the keyword on the first page or 2 of results. I see that over and over, but I don't really know why. I imagine it's because Google ranks based on a mixture of your site's authority and your site's relevance to the search term. Your site is more relevant to the search term than Digg, because Digg is just a bookmark and not content. But if there are lots of competing authority sites that have content relevant to the search term, it's hard for your site to surpass all those. Digg only beats some of those based on its status as a huge traffic authority site. |

I use Bookmarking Demon and I only use unknown Pligg or Scuttle sites for bookmarking purposes (IOW, I don't use DIGG or Properller...the biggies) Even so, sometimes the PLIGG listings will outrank me, but only for a short time. If you build on a pre-owned domain, you won't have this problem even for a short time in most cases. |

If the competition is really low then yes, there is a big possibility that the bookmarked will outperform your website at first. But don't forget, you will be optimizing your web aren't you? So, the bookmarked will lose the power in time, and decrease in rank, and your site take over. I guess that you don't have to worry about it if you have plan to build strong backlinks to your site. |

Even if Digg outranks your site, its good, because the link goes to your site, right? I'm missing something -- why would it be a bad thing that digg ranked higher than your site? Having your link from digg and your site on page 1 leaves less space for other competitors on the first page, and I wouldn't worry about the relative ranking of digg vs your site...
