Suggestions for a newbie on finding the top 1-5 directories for specific niches?

There are many but it you look up a few more and visit prchecker.info
the higher the number the better.

my articles are over 14 days in their approval queue....
i think i won't use them anymore...

hahaha capone.. I agree with you on that. My article was reviewed after 14 days, and then during the 3rd phrase, where its supposed to enter the final editorial part, it got rejected, and the whole article was deleted from their database. I immediately sent an email asking why? They shoot me back a "your query has been received by us and we will follow back shortly" And its been a couple of weeks with no reply.

What I like to do is write two articles, I submit one to Ezine Articles and the other to GoArticles. GoArticles approves pretty quickly so I get instant gratification while the Ezine Article helps me build long lasting backlinks over time. That way I am never out of luck waiting for Ezine to approve. Ezine and GoArticles are the ONLY two directories I use for my article marketing plans, together they work quite well.

How about just googling
"(your niche) article directories"?

Too simple?
Too primitive?
Did not work for some?

I only submit to the Google high page rank directories such as ezinearticles.com, articlebase.com, articlealley.com, buzzle.com, and goarticles.com. The most important thing to remember is to write good relevant content and follow the article directory guidlines and you won't need to worry about being rejected. This strategy serves as a great way to acheive back links with the search engines.
