Default Is this legal?

Hi guys,
Just wanting to know, is it legal to give away PLR or ebooks that are free but written by someone else away?
I am wanting to give a incentive to sign up to my list. I thought people might be more inclined to sign up if they are getting something free from it.
If this is possible I would like to link the PDF directly into my welcome page. Do I just upload the entire PDF on my web server and link to it like this www.mydomain/prduct.pdf?

PLR are determined by the license given to you upon getting the product...

if you have a PLR license, it means you are free to do whatever you want with the material, including giving it away to collect optins, but be warned if it's a resell rights or a master resell rights license, these usually don't include giving away for free option.

For the download page, you shall upload the pdf to your server, and put a link to the file on a "thankyou" page, where you can warm your prospect towards your paid offer, or offer him an affiliate product in order to make some profits.

Make sure your thank you page has enough instructions on how they shall download the product, put links to adobe reader so they can download it if they don't have it on their machine,

Remind them they will receive updates and communications from you by email from time to time, and it's better to instruct them to white list your domain to ensure they receive your emails.

Most of the ebooks tell what you can or can't do with them. This notice is usually found on the first or the last pages. If no information is found on the book or other stuff, just try to contact with the creator and ask for permission. And if there is no contact information, just go for another ebook that you can have permission to offer for your sign-ups.

I guess this will be the most suitable action model.

thanks very much for your advice here. Not sure about how to find out about licensing information if I am DL the books from a free source. Do you have an example page of what information to give them about adobe (complete newb)? My welcome page at the min is The Perfect Housewife: Thank You. In my first followup email I am giving a free chocolate chip cookie (LOL LAME)

You're welcome,,

If you get the material from a free source, you shall find the licensing information either in the preface of the ebook (the very first pages), or on the site itself, it will tell you what you can do and what you can't do with it, if you couldn't find this information, tell me about the site you get from and I'll try to find it for you...

For adobe, just post the link to adobe reader download page Adobe - Adobe Reader download - All versions

And write something like "This book is a pdf file, to read it you need adobe reader installed on your computer, if you don't have iot you can download it here for free (the link)"
You can't imagine how people can mess simple things like this and never figure out if the book doesn't open because something stupid like this.

Don't think about your marketing as lame, it's from regular people to regular people, and it may include things that are silly yet so effective!!

I'll PM you my personal email address if you need further help

Thanks goldmine, I sent you an email, going to have a go at sorting the page out probably tonight. Leaving for America a week today, so things are super hectic. I don't plan on launching my site until I get back. Getting my auto responder, and emails set is my number 1 priority; I don't want to be writing emails at the last minute just to try and keep up. I want everything to do with my list building absolutely perfect before the site launches.

Anna - just a couple opinions I'd like to throw out there:

1 - I absolutely hate it when people link to a pdf document on their site unless they say in advance it's a pdf. This is because I'm on a slow connection so a pdf can take forever to load and can totally lock up my browser. So, make sure that you label the pdf as such next to the download link so people can right click and save as instead of opening it in the browser (I'd include those instructions). IMO, the better way to distribute is as a zip file so you don't run into this issue.

2 - similarly, if you're going to send the link to your email list, make sure you send the link to the download page, not to the pdf itself. Not only will you get to track how many people went to the page you won't force them to open the pdf in their browser. As a subscriber if I see a link to a pdf I just delete the message because I refuse to do that.

3 - I have a ton of cooking ebooks on a lot of differnet cuisines if you need one. Just let me know.

Good luck to you

hi vagabondette, Thanks for your advice. I have the pdf on my server at the minute. I am not sure how to make it a DL file. I am definitely be interested if you have a good cookbook to use. The one I have is a chepo looking Italian cookbook; it's not very good. If you let me use one of your own to give a way for free I would be happy to link to your other products somewhere on the site. Will pm you my site if you would like to see it.

I will have a search to see how to make this PDF file Downloadable.

Anna,

Send me a link to your site and I'll take a look at what I have that might work for you. Let me know if there is a specific cuisine you're looking for.

As far as making the pdf a download file, it's easy. On your thank-you page you will just have a link that says something like "click here to download your free cookbook"

That link will look something like this http:/ rsite.com/foldername/document.pdf

When they click on the link the pdf will open in that window (or a new one if you set it up that way) or if they right click they can download it directly to their computer.

Let me know if you need more help with this. I'll be looking for your PM.
