The best thing to do is set an advertising budget for yourself. That way it's not so scary and you know what you can afford.

That is what real businesses do.

You can also reinvest your profits back into your business. It's less risky that way. If you are getting 3000 visitors to your site in one month you should be making sales.

Free traffic is cool but it's very hard to scale and can be unpredictable.

Before you even think about paying for traffic you must be confident that you have a converting offer or better still a converting funnel of offers. You'll only ever be sure of this by testing. Get to know your metrics. Start small and only when you know that your Earnings per click are greater than your Cost per click should you consider scaling up.
      Hope this helps.

Point is making money is not only about traffic.

I strongly disagree, it's not only about making money, but creating userbase, subscribers and loyal followers. As soon as you send traffic to your blog or website, make sure your users take action, either they like your fb page, subscribe your YouTube channel, share and tweet your blog posts. If you can't convince your users sharing your content, you're losing money on paid ads or time on free methods. So, making money shouldn't be your primary concern. Remember, most people do not buy in their first visit, so making money by sending cold traffic by paid ads (yes, its still cold) to an unknown place (your blog) is a thing of the past. You should first build your trust, which most marketers overlook in their IM journey and often misguide any newbies looking for advice here. As you grow your userbase, you can do whatever you want with the traffic you own, better sell them in the back-end with email marketing, it's considered a perfect business model.

Just like the poster above said...Making money is not just about traffic.

You could use paid traffic and send a lot of visitors to your landing page. But that doesn't mean that you will make money just because you got a lot of traffic.

Lots of traffic doesn't = Lots of money.

You will need a 'highly' converting offer if you are going to funnel paid traffic into a landing page hoping for 'conversions'.

But what most new marketers don't realize is that paid traffic is a learning curve in itself.

So...Paid traffic is something that 'still' requires a learning curve.

For new marketers I recommend you learn FREE Marketing methods instead.

But don't make the mistake of going out and trying to learn 2, 3 or even 10 marketing methods (like most new marketers do).

You will only be 'watering' down your 'creative' energy and not getting results in any one.

Here's Why You Should Learn ONLY (1) Marketing Method:

      Hey Rory,
is that you ? Good video man.

      Solid advice !

I call it scattered brain marketing and it will ruin a newbie. Trying to concentrate on mastering 2 or 3 diffrent models at that same time.

They think it will save them time.

      But it only extends it

Yes it's me Robert. Thanks for the compliments. Unfortunately most people in the online industry get too carried away chasing the bucks and are looking for short cuts but in truth the short cut is really the 'long cut' (as you said...it extends the learning curve).

Free traffic can be immensely rewarding if you can find a winning formula or system to outsource or automate most of the task.

Both paid and free traffic generation methods are good and has cons and pros. Personally, I prefer paid traffic because I can turn it on and off as I wish. I have been able to use paid traffic especially Youtube ads to build good ROI and a list of more than 10K responsive buyers in just 3 months.

If i was to use free traffic, it would have taken more time to build that large subscribers on my list.

To me, if you have the funds and the patience with paid traffic, you should learn how to drive paid traffic. You will be glad you did.

I know how it feels to be able to drive traffic that can boost your sales and commission with good ROI.

Paid Traffic all the way my friend.

It's certain ! However, you must find it ! Maybe can start with paying and then take advantage of it to make a snowball effect for free.

Understanding what you have. Paid is instant and free takes time to build. I use pay traffic PPC for testing ad copy. Once I have it converting I will then leverage free sources.

I did a video yesterday on youtube 100% free and so far it's added 27 leads into my account. Not bad for something that took me no more than 10 minutes to create and set up. Cha ching

I agree with the fact you need a converting vehicle to make any money. If you choose paid traffic you need to do like Paul said, make sure your making more money than you are paying out in traffic. If you have a converting vehicle I would capitalize on paid traffic because you can scale it real easy. Free is not as predictable. In my opinion. I have a budget every month and when that runs out I use free traffic. I get much better results with the paid traffic as far as sign ups but so far limited results on profit. But I am studying the paid method (PPC) until I master it, then will move on to another method. I have found a paid PPC source that will not break, so this is at least giving me a lot of knowledge. I as well as a lot of marketers find that it doesn't matter how pretty or how great your offer is, without the right traffic your dead in the water.

What is your current conversion ratio from free traffic ? You need to do the math and see if it will be profitable using same search terms in PPC platform.

Paid traffic is the fastest way to get off the ground. There's certainly testing involved, but even more important than an offer that converts is an offer that gives you a substantial return. If you are making $20 per sale on a hot-selling item, your take-home could easily be just $5 when investing with the more reputable PPC platforms. You could probably do better with a Fiverr gig.

If I am understanding you correctly, you are saying, you can get 3000 people to your site per month.

    O.K.

So, that is an average of 100 people per day--so how many sales or opt-ins are you getting in a day?

I have to agree with some of the other posters--if you are not converting well now--not much is going to change with paid traffic.

Sure, you can get 3000 people in a day or so--but if your site is not converting well--then this is just a waste of money.

Make sure you site is converting good--before you invest in paid traffic--this way the money you spend will be well spent.

Free traffic is great if you know how to consistently bring in the traffic.

But if you had a budget, there is nothing wrong with the help of paid as well. Set yourself a budget that isn't ridiculous.

I like to use both. Free is good for testing and then as you know something converts you can "throw money at it." This way you know whether people are signing up, buying etc.... There are a lot of sources for each and you just have to find what works for you. there is certainly many ways to do this thing. I hope you pick a successful path. Good free sources include content marketing, social marketing, etc... and when you have a list big enough you can do ad swaps or click banking. I think most people either do PPC or solo ads on the paid side. Whatever brings you the relationships and sales you need is good

what free traffic sources are most responsive on a general basis? How do you test an offer there with free traffic to see if it converts? What kinds of offers convert the best?

I think the best way to see if it converts is action. did they join your list or buy your product etc... If they did what you intended then it "converted" well. The bad part about most free methods is that you just have to wait and see. It is usually not an instant thing like paid traffic can be...

Use Paid traffic first to test product, funnel and conversions. If Product passes the paid traffic test, start to build Free traffic channels that may over time replace a part of your Paid traffic budget.

    "Free" traffic?

The only people who get "free" traffic are the ones who value their time at $0.00 per hour.

Would you rather spend an hour on some tedious, soul-crushing tasks, or spend $10 and spend that time with your family or doing something else that's valuable to you?

Every corporate entity that I've ever worked with has considered "free" traffic to take up to half of their online budget. There's no such thing as free traffic.

Once you take that as a truth, you can move to the next part of the conversation which is: "Which one of these paid traffic methods gives me the best ROI?".

The major benefit of PPC is that the traffic is generally instant, and is consistent, and within reason, I know there aren't going to be any major shifts a la Penguin & Panda updates.

That's why Google & FB both make a gazillion dollars each, it's hard not to drink at the well when the water tastes so good!

I personally prefer free organic traffic. I mean why pay money when you can get it for free? Provided you are doing all the right things to drive free organic traffic. Paid traffic sometimes is essential, but it makes sense only if you stand to make more money than you originally spent. So, yes, I choose free organic traffic over, paid traffic.
