There's a new trend on Twitter that's really bugging me. A follower will send an affiliate link to about 3-5 specific users...I guess to make it look more personal and trick you into clicking, thinking that it's a tailor made message for "you". For example : "Make Killer Cash With Twitter By Being Really Annoying: http://lamelinkhere.com @suitej, @jasonbenfield, @justinbrooke, @jkswopes" I can only assume that a big crowd of marketers picked up a "guru tip" somewhere and started doing it every day. lol. Am I right, or is it something that just "caught on"? Am I the only one annoyed by it? Am I the only one unfollowing every one who does it? lol Cheers Jay |

I feel you Jay - I see it, but less now because I ALWAYS unfollow anyone who does it.

The last 60-120 days or so that tactic has really exploded. Once I hit 10,000 followers a while back, it really picked up. I'm thinking 10,000 plus may be the magic number to target. I'm sure there are plenty marketers out there that will gladly "take credit" for creating the mess. George |

I've seen it too, very annoying. And just another reason why I don't understand Twitter! How the heck did this thing get so popular?

I agree, it's been about 2 months of that dumb tactic. As you say, these marketers are following a template. They'll do anything to avoid building a genuine relationship based on providing value. Paul |

I've been getting these as well but they are not followers. They seem to pick three twitter user names use the @ so you get it in your mentions but you can't unfollow the pains because you are not following them in the first place |

That's why I haven't been actively hunting for followers! I'll only be spamming myself! |

Yeah I've been getting these too. A step worse are the people that send a tweet like "How are you? I discovered you through http://SPAM @person1 @person2 @person3" hoping that I'll follow back.

Almost all of these people are not even your followers. I simply just block them. Yeah, really annoying. Whoever did start this trend should be hung by his toes and forced to watch Brady Bunch reruns while listening to Muzak. |

Another thing I find annoying is when someone auto tweets 10 messages in a row. Those kinds of people are quick to get blocked from my list ![]() Mike Hill |

Yeah dude I see it all the time in Twitter as well. I have been methodically unfollowing the people who send me this stuff. In fact, I have a general rule of thumb to unfollow anyone who does not at least attempt to add value to the discussion.

There are a couple of other Twitter tricks that prompt me to unfollow. One is the nonstop "inspirational quotes." The other is the direct message that goes something like "Was it you who sent me this (affiliate)link? If so, thanks!" They think I am going to click on their affiliate link and they'll earn a commission.

Same as you leanne, I found they are not followers either. Seem to get more targeted to users with larger followers lists

It might be related to TweetTycoon. An affiliate program that sells 10 different products, teaches you how to auto-mize message sending, following and unfollowing, and provide you with their pre-made messages. I tried it once, and it sucked. Avoid it like a rash.

Hi jay you are not alone i absolutely hate this system!!!! ive just literally come over here from twitter where i have blocked another 10 users for doing exactly this. I find it so annoying but what they tend to do is aim it more at people with bigger twitter followings as these people are likely to have their username searched and they will then get in the twitter searches a lot more. I average about 25 of these a day so it can be really annoying. Its something that you have to live with. It gets to me in the same way as the affiliate links on my facebook wall which i can delete and do so immediately. Heres a blog post that will show you that you are not alone about how many i have blocked on twitter for similar reasons: Why I blocked 1,000 people from following me on twitter last week | myeasyonlinepay.com The Samantha Milner Blog kind regards sam X |

been there and clicked that! twitter is being misused when it comes to mention @messages like that. unfollowing will definitely help. but its only just started and if not this then other ways will be found to get you all to click on those links.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies, glad to see it's not just me being a grumpy ol' Twitter user. lol. Looks like something you just have to deal with for the moment, but it seems to help when you rant about it for minute or two with others. lol Cheers! Jay |
