Default Popup Opt-ins? How Many And Which Are best?

I'm trying to improve my subscriber sign up rate by changing my popup opt-ins.

Is it best to have a popup appear within a few seconds of landing at the site AND an inline optin half way down the sales copy?

Would it be a good idea to also add an exit popup or will that annoy customers and potential affiliates?

Also is it best to have the first popup simply popup or slide in from top, bottom, left or right?

Am i thinking too hard about this?!

Any tried and tested advice would be muchly appreciated?

Thanks

Affiliates? Any opt-in will annoy many affiliates, lose some, and make it impossible to attract some others. From our perspective, it's the biggest "sales page leak" there is. As you can see from many recent discussions here, quite a lot of professional affiliates, if they see an opt-in on your page, will look no further at all. If you'll excuse my putting it rather bluntly, we don't want vendors building their lists from leads produced with our time, energy, effort, money, skills and experience. Not when there are always so many other things without that potential problem for which we can readily be affiliates instead.

I wouldn't think so - it's a hugely important and significant issue to someone who wants affiliates to produce sales for him.

Sorry - not the type of answer you wanted/expected, I do appreciate.

Hi Alexa,

Thanks for your thoughts on this, i hadn't considered that opt-ins could discourage affiliates. Totally makes sense..

Apologies for not getting back sooner.

The best thing to do is test, test, test. People can give you advice for what they do but that won't always work best for you. Try every different combination you can as see what works best, then try some more.

Personally, I have one "lightbox" popin as well as the inline ones throughout the sales page. For my "lightbox" testing, I found a slight improvement in opt-in rate for waiting 5 seconds over waiting 20 seconds.

And I think most affiliates now realize that the opt-in boxes are actually good for them and can lead to more sales.

Hope this helps.
