Thoughts on these Music Promotion companies?

I'm a little bit skeptical of a lot articles and eBooks about promoting your own music because they either only point out things I am already doing or they are not from very credible authors who aren't even well-known in the music industry. If they claim to be able to teach people to be successful in the music industry, why is it that they themselves aren't successful?

If someone like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson, Rammstein or any big artist wrote ANYTHING about how to promote your own music, I would analyse every single word that comes from them because their own success is proof that they know what they are doing.

I'm aware of what CD Baby does, and I'm already using a similar service. I'm using a service called Distrokid, which basically lists all your songs on iTunes, GooglePlay, Spotify etc. for a yearly fee.


Good advice in your article, I'm doing all of it at the moment except for Flyers. I used to be part of a band that played many shows but it's only recently that I've ventured out into becoming a solo artist. I don't have big plans to play shows as of yet, I'm mostly interested in growing a Youtube fanbase.

I've only got 2 songs released at the moment, and another will be on its way by next week or so.
I've just finished filming a very expensive music video with a strong focus on a story, which will be ready in a few weeks but I want to make sure I've figured out ways to promote my Youtube videos before its release or I would feel pretty demotivated.

Just a quick update, I decided to try out Google Adwords for 2 days. I will say that I am quite disappointed in the results.
My video's views jumped by over 1,800 views in the 2 days, but little to no engagement at all. There were only a few thumbs ups added and 1 new comment, which doesn't really add up.
It's almost like purchasing fake views from bot accounts but in a perfectly legal way since it's YouTube themselves selling them. If that makes any sense.



What's Music Niche? Is that a promotional tool on YouTube?

I also strongly agree with you there, but I don't believe the number of videos you have on a channel should be the main determinant of how big your fanbase can grow. I could probably upload a couple of extra videos of me doing home recording covers (like so many Youtubers do), but that's something I don't enjoy doing and it will almost feel like I'm doing it for the sake of forcing out more content.
I suppose when my Youtube channel has more subscribers and people who follow it, it'd be fun to do some Vlogs every now and then or teasers for upcoming songs. But for now, apart from just uploading studio recorded songs, I don't think viewers would even bother with more casual content.

Danny Worsnop is also the lead vocalist of a very big and established band called Asking Alexandria so obviously there is already a massive following there so maybe that's not the best example.

I know of a few music Youtube channels that come out of nowhere with only 1-3 videos, 1 of them makes a breakthrough and goes almost viral, then every video after that is just as popular. They don't end up with a lot of videos on their channels, but every video is a high production quality video. It's almost like quality over quantity and it works well for them.

The opposite of that would be musicians doing lower quality home recordings of themselves doing cover songs and uploading a lot of videos on their channels, which they do gain a following after some time, but it can take years especially when you're competing with so many others doing cover songs.


Surely, there has to be a formula somewhere that works!
