A single domain with multiple keywords?

I know ideally you'd want to have a different domain name for each keyword you're targeting but to me that seems like a waste. If you have a set of day 10 keywords that all center around the same topic and have 2 of the same words in each keyword can you just buy a domain name with those two keywords (the primary ones) and then target all of those different keywords to that single domain? To me it seems like this would make the most sense because you'd be building a single site with a lot of content rather than a lot of sites with a little content. It would also give more opportunities for deep linking through articles, lenses, etc.

If this is doable, how is it best to set it up?

Say the site is about pet food and you were able to get petfood.com. Your keywords are homemade pet food, healthy pet food, dog food, cat food, vegan pet food... you get the idea.

Is it ok to have a single blog for all of the topics and do categories for each key word? Then when you deep link you can link to the category page or an individual post where the category name would show in the url.

Or, is it better to have separate mini-blogs for each keyword? And if the mini-blog is the solution, which is better:

vegan.petfood.com or
petfood.com/vegan

I know this was a lot of questions in one post but I appreciate your help. If the answer really is you should register veganpetfood.com, healthypetfood.com, etc. that's what I'll do but I'd rather save the money and build a larger site which could potentially have a couple hundred pages rather than a bunch of sites witth just a couple dozen.

Thanks!
