There are a million different comment spam plugins for Wordpress, just do a Google search. It's been a while since I've had to deal with this problem. I remember one client had thousands of spam comments that needed removing. O.o

Also, you may even consider removing comments. A lot of popular bloggers do this like Seth Godin.

+1 for Akismet. Works like a charm!

I had no idea Seth does this.. interesting indeed... does he mention how he dictates what he deletes? I'd be interested to read about that (google isn't giving me love when I look it up).

This is rather expected even for new sites. There are many illicit manners of building backlinks and one of such is spamming blog comments; annoying for the blog owners and rather ineffective, even dangerous for the backlink builders.

The best solution is using akismet. There's a free license and it works great.

I have one website with 21,000 comments (not using Akismet) and counting and another with only legitimate comments (using Akismet).

I am unsure what askimet does, it came with my blog automatically but I never used it. It can help to add a captcha and maybe moderate responses. I think a lot of people don't know the difference between conversation marketing and straight up spam... sorry you are struggling with this

Hello, Akismet is one of the free and good ones. There are also many free plugins to help you to stop spam comments. Just go and search and test it out. Thanks :-)

Did you try adding the latest captcha method? Or use discus to make login mandatory and disable the option to add hyperlinks anywhere inside the comment. Prompt the users with a message that spam comments are strictly removed and get a strict moderation in place, before making the comments live in your website.

Make sure you have Wordpress and download Askimet. That'll filter all the pesky spam comments for you.

Yes you need a spam blocking tool like akismet or similar. A few spam comments may sometimes come through anyway with such a tool, but to a high degree such softwares really blocks the spammy comments.

    Hi,

The suggested plug ins help. Consider using a system like Disqus too. When I changed to Disqus for a minute my spam died down to 1 spammy comment every 2-3 days. No likee the log in to comment. Fabulous deterrent.

Also, comment on top blogs from your niche. Write 3-4 paragraph, thoughtful comments. Almost like this tells spammers to stay away because if you are not actively commenting on other blogs these programs and spammers seem to make a beeline for your blog. From my experience at least.

Note; count your blog as growing. Getting spam shows you're popping up on the radar more, an awesome thing. I used to flip when flooded with spam. Then I realized I had something valuable that bots and spammers wanted to use as free advertising, to spread their word far and wide based on riding my coat tails.

Not a bad deal when you ponder it. Because I recall when I nabbed 3 visits a day to my blog. No spam comments back then LOL.

I dislike Akismet. Lots of spam comments got mixed in with the real ones, and some real comments got place in the spam folder. Was a pain in the neck to keep sifting through the spam folder for real comments.

I now use WP Spamshield. No spam comments at All, not even in the spam folder. Blocked completely.

I find that built in default spam blocker within Wordpress to be more than sufficient. I have it set fairly strict and have never had a real comment blocked nor a spammed comment squeak through.

I'm a fan of akismet. I've even set it to silently discard spam comments, which works a treat. It's crazy to see the thousands of spam comments it's blocked though!

Akismet is the favourite to catch manual spam, you could use cookies for comments plugin also you can use Honeypot technology to get a spambot to identify itself. Activate WP spam fighter go into settings / WP spam fighter check the honeypot setting and save. This will activate a hidden form in the comments area which manual users can't see, but bots see and fill the form to identify themselves.

I had the same problem and Disqus do the trick. Also, they have an add program called Reveal which can get you some $$. Not a lot, but getting a few hundreds a year while getting rid of spam is pretty cool.

When I had my blog the only spam plugin that I used was Akismet it worked really good. You can easily spot the spam comments and delete if they are not relevant to what your blog post is about. I also looked at their website url if it looked spammy then I would delete the comment.
