Is there an advantage of gmail over the others?

New guy question, gmail seems very popular. Is there an advantage of a gmail account over Verizon, yahoo, etc...?

I direct all my email accounts to my primary Gmail account because:

* The spam filters are better than others'

* The filtering rules work great -- I don't have to see endless messages about (whatever); I can just filter them straight to the Archive

* It's easy to read my email on my cell

* Easy searches -- I can find messages fast

* I can send boilerplate messages with Canned Responses

Basically, Gmail works great for me. :-)

As the final place for your email gmail is very good - for catching spam and directing messages into folders etc. Plus access to the other google apps can come in handy.

One thing I'd like to point out though is it should not be your 'official' email. For Example, for every website you should use emails associate with that site. Especially if you're doing affiliate marketing - ie don't try to sign up for an affiilate program with a gmail account instead of a domain account.

Also - I like creating different email accounts - or forwards too - to identify who I'm giving my email too. I do this to help me track spammers and folks who violate their own policies. Sadly, many places do. I'll get completely unrelated emails from different sites and the only way is for a site to have give/sold/provided the email to them.

As others have said tho' - feeding these emails into your gmail account is great.

I agree with jacktackett.
Also If you don't take advantage of the many tools in the Gmail "Labs"
you are missing a very unique part of Gmail!

Less Spam.. Least No. of ads... No Promotions.. Gmail Labs... In-built Chat (with video)... Easy To Use Labels... Easy Search... Email Forwarding etc.

Still getting used to the fact that I can't organise to folders. Labels aspect not as good IMHO. lots of other advantages as mentioned above though.
