For a webdesign company domain would you recommend a name identifying you as a local webdesign company or use obscure global name more general?

    Depends on where you are going to be prospecting. If you're prospecting and getting clients in your local area then of course having a domain name making people know youre local would be a good idea. if you're marketing to everyone everywhere then a more general name would be best.

    I would go with Global as it's a web design business which is easy enough to target all, or you could get both.

    Yes - global all the way. Since online businesses can get clients from all over the world.

    That depends, are you in a large city or Mayberry?

    My point is you need more traffic than you can handle opposed to not enough traffic and stuck with a local brand/name.

    If it's global this will be much much harder to compete with others as you probably already know this. In this case it should be easier to get clients focusing in your local area. After that you can always move global.

    Personally I would go local at first, because competition isn't so high as on global scale. If you live in a large city, I suggest you using city name in domain.

    Since the type of marketplace you're entering can be serviced by any company with an Internet connection, it would be best to not think locally.

    However, you mentioned the use of an "obscure global name" ... I think that's a mistake as well.

    I would search for a business domain name that is:

    * Memorable and unique
    * Short rather than long
    * Inclusive of your USP (your #1 benefit or what you want as your company brand)
    * Different from your top competitors to avoid customer confusion
    * Not cute, funny, or fancy
    * A name that you can register as a dot com (important if you want to sell your domain later - it's the standard for commercial businesses)* Bonus: if the name contains a top keyword (so at a glance, folks will know what you do)

    I use Impossibility and LeanDomainSearch to help me find great dot com domain names that are available to register right now.

    The very best to you,

    Steve

    I'd focus on a more general, global name. You might want to start locally (which you can do with a general, global name) but it won't limit you into expanding in other areas.

    With a more general name, you can create a page specifically designed to the local market then as you build your portfolio / offering you can very easily expand that. It won't be so easy with a name focused on a specific area.

    I always prefer more global names as this won't limit you in the future.

    I like the idea of starting local too but it all depends on how you're building awareness. I think your domain should be your business name, and it should be short and memorable if possible. Don't do exact match domain name SEO strategy it's not 2001.

    It boils down to who you are targeting.

    Are you providing services such as local SEO services and web design for local businesses, where you want to actually meet up with local business owners in person and work with them to get their websites featured on local search results, including on Yelp, Google Maps? Then stick with something local.

    But if you're targeting a worldwide audience, and you're offering general SEO services, then stick with something global.

    I like it. It makes your value proposition obvious and doesn't limit you to a specific locale.
