I'm looking at setting up a local lead generation business. I have bought a couple of courses but they seem to skim over the details and not give you any in depth training.

I am not looking at high ticket courses due to minimum funds to invest. When I Google for information I keep getting links to products about general lead generation.

I am trying to find content and info on starting a business generating leads to sell to local businesses. The whole nine yards and including detailed training on what to include in a landing page to help generate leads.

I don't need Wordpress training, I can do all that. Just the marketing side of this business.

Have you tried looking into the sub sections on this forum ? Their are several threads on it just in the off line section. Most are geared towards local lead generation. Not sure if that is what you are looking for, but you can seach each forum here using the advanced seach. Here is a direct to the offline section on lead generation -

You don't really need to go in depth with that as lead generation is very basic.
It all depends on how you get your leads.
Selling is the easiest part as long as you get leads you will have no problem.

Most people tend to do this.
Since you're going into the lead generation biz and you're just starting.

1.Get a niche and settle on that first by building a list targeted to that niche
2.Get a prospect list of clients. It's easy you can try classified ads or local selling ( cold calling local businesses near you)
    3. Promote their product/service/website on the list you generated.

Now the tricky part here is on how you would get leads for the specific niche you chose.
Some people scrape leads. Some gather through ads while some connect with people or fan pages that are popular or has a high active fanbase then cut them a percent of earning or pay for promotion.

    Hi Trevor,

Setting up a lead generation business is very simply, maybe that is why it felt like a skim to you. Now actually running a successful lead generating business, that is much harder to do.

Your instincts about the need to focus on marketing is spot on, however learning marketing is a much more comprehensive task, you are not going to get that knowledge from a cheap little course. There is not a single course that covers everything you need to know. You need something more along the lines of this:

    https://marketing.wharton.upenn.edu/

After 4-6 years in higher education and training you should be pretty good at it. Those are the sort of people that you are likely to be competing against.

Having said that, I am all for self-education and there is nothing they teach you at university that you cannot learn on your own. A great place to start is to get familiar with all of the primary concepts and ideas that make up the science of marketing. A great place to start is here (and it's free):
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketing

Then take a course or 2 on marketing analytics, some courses on landing page design, followed by a few courses on Conversion Rate Optimization. That should give you the bare essentials in concept knowledge and application of marketing concepts.

It takes a while to absorb the huge amount of knowledge you will need to compete in the marketplace, the lead generation businesses exist almost exclusively in the most competitive niches, so beginner level knowledge isn't likely to cut it.

You can keep up with the latest concepts and tools be reading this blog:
Marketing Land | Digital Marketing & Martech News, Tactics & Strategies

Next, you are going to need to get your hands on some tools of the trade, so that you can perform rapid iteration of custom landing pages, performing split testing, CRO, ESP/Marketing automation solutions, etc.

And finally, you will need to learn how to master various platforms for web traffic generation, and perhaps offline lead generation. SEO, SEM, SMM, and various advertising platforms will need to be mastered.

So I hope you weren't thinking that a 10 day course is all you need to get going, it's more like a 10 month process to get started, and another 10 years to completely master.

And this is just the proverbial "tip of the iceberg".

I've been generating leads for over 18 years. The first 2 years I strictly build out my own offers and sold the leads directly to end users. Once CPA networks started to pop up, then I also started promoting PPL (pay per lead) offers that I could just get from them and not have to worry about anything other than sending traffic to the offer.

I don't generate leads for local and I'm no expert when it comes to it. If that's your plan, I would probably look to learn facebook advertising, as they have significant targeting / retargeting abilities. This is what I have been spending all my free time on. I've been learning from a couple fb agency owners and a top fb marketer. I plan to open my own agency later this year and promote lead gen offers as well.

Another option is to generate leads nationwide using PPL offers that you can get from CPA networks or direct with advertisers as an affiliate. Or even creating your own nationwide offers and getting affiliates.

Getting offers from CPA networks is the easiest and all you have to do is send traffic to the offers. I've been doing this for over 16 years.

If you get set up directly with the advertiser you can often get a higher payout and get your own custom landing page or possibly create your own and they host it.

If you can create your own offers that convert well, you can get affiliates to promote to. You obviously will need to develop your own buyers as well. But it's really not that hard. However, you also get to control all the thank you page traffic and you will get a copy of all the data, which you can further monetize. There is more risk at this level, but the rewards can be significant.

It's probably easiest to just start with CPA networks, then direct with advertisers and then try your hand at creating your own offers.

To generate traffic I have always taken a short cut and acquired 3rd party data (email). Which if you're not familiar with it, it is simply data that the users have provided permission to receive messages from third parties. So it is 100% can-spam compliant.

It's not without its own challenges but IMO, it's far more cost-effective in the long run, as it's cheaper, quicker and highly scalable compared to building your own opt-in lists. Granted, the data isn't as responsive as building your own highly targeted opt-in list, but the lower cost offsets it.

The key is that you want to always be segmenting openers / clickers - removing unresponsive users. That way you are building smaller, but much more responsive lists. Which you should eventually be able to send less and make more with each mailing. Essentially you are converting the data from quantity to quality.

    Anyway, something to think about.

Trev, may I ask which industry and job you are in?

If you are into local business lead generation, my advice to you is simple.

    1. Set your own blog in which you tell people who you are, what you do and why they should listen to you,

    2. Set up a lead capture page using InstalMember, Lead Pages, Optimize Press WP Profit Builder and Rocket

    3. Then create namecards with your name, address, blog and squeeze page url.

    4. Go to Meetup or just normal social networking events whereby people in your niche hanged about and socialized with one another.

Greet, smile and talk to them like how you get to know your friends before presenting them with your namecards.

Other than that, you can also run Facebook ads targetting the people in your industry that you KNOW will be interested in what you offer.

Just my 4 cents worth of advice.

Setting up a local lead generation business is super easy. You'll need some cash to get started however.

Find high volume local industries, like electricians, plumbing etc. Stuff people rush to the phone for because they have an emergency...

Get some call tracking numbers from say www.callrail.com and redirect the numbers to a reputable local company

Then go to https://paypercall.yp.com create PPCall ads for industries you want to target. Then keep an eye on the results.

Yes you're sending free calls to them, but your gathering valuable information with little risk. If you can generate say 10+ calls a month, ring them up and a few competitors and see if you can sell the calls for more than you're paying.

Just an idea off the top of my head. I have used YP PPCall but not to do this.

If you are trying to find out company details, I think local business directories would be really helpful for you instead of just looking into Google. They are more organized like Hotfrog, Yelp, yellowpages etc.

    All the best!
