Default Advertising On Blogs Seems To Be... Sucking

Anybody here advertise on blogs? I threw down some cash to advertise on a couple major blogs this month. So far both have had a horrible ROI.

Have you made a good ROI with ads on blogs?

No, I advertised on a couple of blogs that get over 1000
uniques daily.

I was expecting to get at least 200-300 uniques in a month
and get about 100 subcribers.

I only got about 10 from each blog... Obviously the ROI
was horrible since I paid about $100 to get listed on a
blog.

EDIT: I won't be doing it again, that's for sure...

Instead of doing it like that you could comment on the blog where you want the add to be... start a conversation with your signature there and see how it goes up... I think this is better than paying...

The company i work for did some of this.

It didn't bring many benefits or returns whatsoever and consequently we have never ever done it again and wouldn't do in the future. As you have said the returns were horrible and almost never worth it.

Done before, CTR sucks, conversion plunged.
I would put the money to hire people to drive free traffic that advertise on blogs.

@IM Headlines and EndGame

Yeah, this has been pretty much my experience too. I was thinking I could at least generate 100 subscribers for $100 and 500 subscribers for $500, but it's not even close. One blog even got 6,000+ uniques per day.

@kevinpotts I do a whole lot of blog commenting. Great for backlink building. I'm finding bloggers don't normally mind if you use keywords for anchor text, so we're doing 50-60 comments per day on other blogs.

Thanks everyone, I was thinking about doing that but now that I have read this I do not think that I will.

Try Google's site placement program.

It's placing your ads on relevant sites.

and...

You could get a lot of visitors for a little bit of money and you can test real cheap!

Ps. If you don't already have a adwords account do a search at this forum and the net and get a free google advertising coupon for $50-100 to experiment with on google's dime.

I did blog advertising once and had similiar results to what everyone was saying earlier... after shelling out $250 for a premier blog advertising spot, i received a whopping 18 uniques per day average and 3 affiliate sales ... so yeah, I came out well under.

My advice would be to see if you can get the blogger to let you do a guest post, or a mock Interview post for his/her readers (if relevant). I did this once (guest post idea) and received a nice influx of visitors for a week.

Of course where the ad is placed on the blog will effect clicks - I'd go for above the fold because if no one sees it no ones gonna click on it.

My ad was at the very top of the page. The first ad you see.
