Looking For The Classic View?

by timokeefe Administrator 69 replies
We've changed our main navigation so that it favours content over the type of view that you use. The "Forum" and "Feed" buttons have been removed, as they previously just showed the same content with different styling. We've replaced them with a new "Forums" section, which contains links to all of the subforums, which should make finding content a lot easier.

If you want to switch between Classic and Modern it's now done via a toggle. The advantage of this is that once you've set your preference to the type of view that you want, you should almost always see that view (N.B. there are a handful of exceptions for pages that only work with one of the view styles). If someone sends you a link, it'll now open in the view you prefer, rather than whatever they were viewing it in. The same goes for emails from us.

If you want to switch back to Classic view I've included screenshots below. For those looking to switch, I apologise for the inconvenience, but you should only need to do this once (if it doesn't work, please let me know).

To switch to Classic on desktop, you can find the button under your username:

If you're on mobile you can find the switch at the bottom of the hamburger menu:

Tablets should see the mobile version, so you should be able to follow the process directly above. If you've requested the desktop version on your tablet or mobile you should just need to press your username to get the appropriate dropdown.

We're aware that there are a few bits and pieces of the new nav that could use tidying up, and we're open to suggestions. We'll likely tweak it a bit more in the coming weeks to make sure it works well for everyone.

    Hey Tim,
    Thanks !!

Just wondering about the potential ramifications of this on new traffic ? Or "newer" traffic ?

How this might affect retention rates, time spent on site etc.. ?

    Thanks

One key impact is that it doesn't show SIGNATURES in the NEW VIEW.

It does a great job of showing top banner ads though.

Yes I noticed the change few days back.

However I am staying with the Classic view after using the latest version for sometime. The feel of forum is missing in the new version for me.

Please get rid of the mouse over on the top black nav bar for desktop.

If you open a page in a new browser tab and go to click the browser tab the mouse over triggers the black full screen nav links.

The mouse over is also inconsistent with all the other top nav drop down links. Just make the nav links so they have to be clicked.

The new view is horrible and does not feel like a forum.

Also, it deliberately chops out signatures. Which I am sorry to say are essential for many of us to bother investing too much time writing good posts if we are not to get any personal publicity. There are other IM forums to invest time in for a bit of a leg up.

          Hey lucies ,
          no need to start yelling

That being said I completely get where you're coming from.

My take? Well you can count me out as there is no sense in renewing my image Sig for $50 this Summer

It's just not worth it at all with this Feed thing.
( Btw, the argument that they have an option to switch back is somewhat irrelevant because newer traffic and newer members will never know this option or never figure out how to do it and just stay with what they
know from the git go : the Feed)

They may need to address this as Iam sure most of the others will do the same and forgo the image Sig

YUP, I will not renew my sig image either.

I also think there will be many that stop posting. Regardless if your paying for an image, many here provide their time/help in exchange for their sig. If there is no ROI for their time, it will be better spent elsewhere.

Tim said that after they made the change that most users didn't switch to classic, so most users aren't seeing anyone's signatures. I suspect that it only a matter of time until it happens.

Yeah, I'm one of the old timers who has really stood by WF and tried to be open minded and adapt with the changes they have made here .My mantra is: it's there baby and they have every Right to do as they see fit !!

But I honestly do not think they even care to address this situation which is a little disappointing.

I was posting here without any Sig for nearly 6 years mainly because I was in non-mmo niches and I just enjoyed over the years partaking in the community and learning from others and giving back when I could.

When I did finally decide to have a Sig and entered the MMO niche 2 years ago I found having a Sig was not any major factor in producing income for me.

It was a very modest income but I have to admit still a nice little additional stream coming in on a monthly basis. And seeing that I was joyfully posting many years before without any Sig or making any money this way...well it was like icing on the cake.

Now though it's really changed. I think more and more of the older members will gradually move on.

The communal participation isn't like it was years ago and now since having a Sig is totally ineffective... well just to be frank there is just not a whole lot of motivation to hang around here.

Who decided that a feed view would remove all signatures displayed in that view? Were any members polled or asked about this? I've switched back to Classic View until this is addressed. Both views should show signatures in my opinion and I don't understand why that is not the case.

The only person I've seen here who was totally sold on the feed - and would have the "feed only" if he could...is an Admin here.

Except when on a mobile - most members seem to prefer a forum to look like...a forum.

As long as there is a choice, no problem. With the number of members who prefer Classic View - I'd say the choice will remain for a while, at least.

Though that over-reactive black toolbar on the classic view may drive me bananas one of these days!

One of our key goals for this quarter is to improve the modern view so that it is more usable, which includes adding some of the classic view features onto the modern view. One of those key features is the signatures, which we were planning on adding to modern later this month. There's some fairly clear feedback in this thread, so we've decided instead to move it up and we'll now aim to add signatures to modern view this week.

You can use control-plus to grow the text area.

As for modifying their style sheets, I'm pretty sure their rules don't explicitly prohibit that. Their webserver's primary admin username is RAstley, and the password is UWereR!ckR0lled.

In modern view, you have to mouse over a signature for it to fully be visible. Otherwise, it is slightly blurred. Will it be changed so that the sigs will be fully displayed?

Also, when you make a change to a signature, it doesn't update all signatures in modern view. If you have already viewed a sig in a thread, then that sig is cached and doesn't update.

You appear to be limiting the space in which the sig can be displayed.

If the screen resolution is lower than about 1300 width the text drops to next line / line wraps. (caused by the right side column making the width less) and the last line is not visible. This can cause not enough are to be present to display the entire sig.

Also if your sig is (any resolution)

    Text Line
    Image
    Text Line

the bottom text line is mostly cut off.

    If you have

    Text Line
    Text Line
    Image

Then part of the image gets cut off.

Sig image is allowed to be 60 px high, but at that size, it doesn't fit in the area provided for the sig. Including 2 lines of text that is.

*** I'm testing image sizes and 50 height is the largest yo can go. Which puts it right at the bottom and has no space under it.

To fix you really need to add a minimum of 10px, but ideally 15 px.

However, this will not fix all possible problems with line wrapping due to screen resolution. The only true fix is to probably not limit the height of the space for the sig.

    I have not tested mobile.

Is there any plan to fix the signature problem (Modern Version) that 2 lines of text and an image doesn't fit in the area being provided for the signature?

I have to shrink the image down to 35 px height in order for it to fit and that is with chrome. I checked firefox and it really needs to be slightly smaller.

A week ago it displayed OK at 45 px, but something changed and now it is down to 35 px.

Haven't tested other browsers or mobile.

I the modern view I couldn't even see **any** replies in a thread!
Not my own and not other people's replies were showing up in the modern view.
I then accidentally managed to switch to the classic view and voila: All replies are there to see.
    Very weird indeed.
