Went from knowing nothing to $10k/month in sales

I think it's nice to hear success stories on here so I thought I would post mine.

I didn't know much about making money online but did a ton of research and finally ended up with a profitable business. I already have a successful career, but my entrepreneurial spirit won't let me just work quietly, I knew there had to be a way I could start making additional money in my spare time. I looked into email marketing, CPC/CPA, affiliate etc but none of those seemed like they would have the payout I was looking for for the time required and there didn't seem to be any real clear cut route to go.

The route I took was through Amazon FBA.

I had to compile a TON of information to figure out everything I needed to do. It seems so easy on paper, but there is really a lot to consider when doing FBA.

My product selection was probably most important. The main things I found out that were important were: Size/weight (shipping from China is expensive), no electronics, no strong brand loyalty, and finding a manufacturer that is actually trustworthy.

Samples are a MUST. I found a few products that I thought for sure I was going to sell because they looked good in the photos and the info on them was good. After I received them, they were total garbage. Most manufacturers will give free samples, but they want you to pay for shipping which is usually around $30-50 per sample, but it is well worth it.

I have a proprietary product selection process I used that I'll keep a secret for now, but I put in a lot of work and research to get where I'm at. merchantwords is a good place to start though.

I think the WORST THING about the entire process was selecting a product that was in a "gated" category and I couldn't have even imagined what a pain it is to get ungated. HOWEVER, I found an amazing article that explained exactly how to do it, I followed it step by step and it actually worked and I was ungated. What a relief considering I had already spent $5k on my product. But now I know the secret to get in gated categories and it's a huge advantage over those who do not know how to get there.

I think one of the other best value/money saving things I found was misterclipping. If you aren't going to have someone take professional photos of your products, using a digital camera and then having misterclipping edit the photos is well worth it. I had 10 photos done for $38 and they look great. Considering professional photographers want to charge $50 per image, it's quite the savings when you are first starting out and it's the images I've used to get to where I am now.

So that's where I'm at. It's a lot of work and quite stressful to grow this business as well as we have a lot of demand and getting new inventory to arrive on time can be stressful but it's quite rewarding so far.

I will not pretend to answer for the person who started this thread by telling their excellent story but from my experience with FBA you do not need to do anything to "drive traffic".

The reason is simple. Huge amounts of buyer traffic is already on Amazon looking to make a purchase. The key is having the right products that you sourced at the right price and they will be found and bought.

That is correct. All you have to do is find the traffic. This can be done the hard way or the easy way. I prefer the easy way by experimenting with ad campaigns.

I am just wondering if it the typical challenges people face that turned you off or something else. Would appreciate if you are bit specific.

Too many moving parts and too much to get broken and/or have defects and just plain not work. Since the goods come from China directly to the FBA warehouse, you can't inspect them yourself to make sure the quality is there. So it may not be a "never" kind of deal, but it just seems like something to be very wary of.

I thought of maybe simpler electronics like flash drives or other storage that's less complicated but decided against it.

FBA? Something to do with selling stuff on Amazon, l guess?

And no sig, link followup, refreshing to see.

    10k, a month!

I would have to employ someone to pull that off within a year.

I do flyers and fonts by the way, so l breathe graphics, lol.

Yes, success is all down to doing what most canned see, or be aware off, as virtually everything online seems unviable in some way.

It used to take me 3 days to do one flyer, now l can do one in less than 2 hours, which means that l can build wealth with it, and in a short period of time.

I only discovered this trick after hitting rock bottom and persisting with flyers for a year or more before going into fonts.

Obviously like some of your ideas, it is a trade secret, so canned be shared, but nothing wrong with giving hints, and inspiring others.

Yep Amazon FBA is "Fulfillment by Amazon" where you ship your goods to Amazon and they fulfill all of your orders. So not only is that nice, but they offer free 2 day shipping to Amazon Prime members so it's a really good deal.

The FBA fees Amazon charges is way less than I could afford to provide my customers with 2 day shipping on my own.

Thanks for that information. I knew I liked to buy items which are fulfilled by Amazon because they seem to arrive quicker and also often save on combined shipping, but did not yet know how it worked from the other side.

Amazon has changed dramatically over the last two years. Selling used to be easy, now it is so competitive. What is a great product today only lasts until another seller discovers it and cuts your price till you make nothing, worse yet is when Amazon jumps in on the listing. Amazon can cut their price way low as they do not have to pay commissions.

The best way to make it on Amazon now is to private label your own product. Then the listing and rights to the product is yours. You control the price at all times.

It is nice to see someone shows that their is work and money to spend. If you want to import products from China. The OP pointed out it costs for shipping, and you will have to test more then one product. I also say the Amazon keyword tool, looks like it costs $30.00 a month to use with a coupon. There are risks in shipping direct to FBA, and I provide the following to make readers aware of some of them..

I have had experience in dealing with Chinese businesses since 1978 as an exporter and 1987 as an importer.

I know many cases in which Chinese suppliers have appointed agents in Western countries and once the sales do well they ditch the agent and set up a branch operation.

If they will do that, it means that those who discover how easy it is to sell through FBA will also be tempted to ditch their customers who are only paying wholesale or ex factory prices, and sell direct at retail

I would never ship direct from China to FBA. I would use an FBA prepping service if I wanted to use FBA.

Also, it is not uncommon for Amazon to decide to sell the same product in competition with their sellers. After all, the sourcing work has been done for them and they know where to buy.

As for finding a manufacturer in China that is actually trustworthy, the biggest mistake people make is to believe everything they read on B2B sites like Alibaba. So few seem to understand that a Gold Supplier badge is bought and is no indication of trustworthiness.

FBA makes it super simple since Amazon handles all of the fulfillment, payments, returns, and customer issues.

It is definitely alot of work but has been the most fun business I've ever had. Glad to hear you're experiencing great success as well.

Your first post shows you why you shouldn't consider doing what you ask about in your second post.

Do you want to operate a business model that often leads to the customers waiting weeks for delivery?

I have had quite a few students start their profitable importing businesses with as little as $300. Profit margins are many times the average quoted by Warriors who dropship. Those who buy direct from manufacturers overseas also have control over shipping times and they don't suddenly find there's no stock to send to the people who've ordered.

Whichever business model you choose, you should definitely get samples for testing before you start selling.

I regard as a student anyone who buys my book, because the learning doesn't stop there.

I have a paid support team that I have trained, and they are able to answer almost all of the questions that my book readers (students) ask.

The OP hasn't been around for a few weeks. so I decided to comment on a few of the posts:

      Would love to know more!
It's a good idea to buy more than one single sample. Buying more will reduce the per unit cost of freight, will give you more confidence of the quality or else confirm that the product fails your standards, and it gives you a few items to test market.

Amazon can cut their price way low as they do not have to pay commissions.

The best way to make it on Amazon now is to private label your own product. Then the listing and rights to the product is yours. You control the price at all times.
Those who are most successful on Amazon are undoubtedly private labeling, but it's not good enough to just buy a cheap generic and slap a label on it. You need to add value in some way, so you don't have to sell on price only.

As @DWolfe said, you don't have to find the traffic, Amazon do that for you. They do it far better than you could do yourself.

      Thank you.
This post highlights the fact that very few bother to read more than the last post or maybe one or two others before they post totally unhelpful posts saying in so many words: "Thanks." They fill the thread with pages of posts that contribute nothing to an otherwise valuable thread, when they could have just clicked on the Thanks button.

Sorry if this has already been asked.
But what does the term "gated products" mean and how do you get something ungated?

I wonder did you look at drop-shipping any small-priced products from like AliExpress or similar source, and charging enough for S&H to cover a small profit, like some marketers recommend to do? It sounds like you have to have more capital up front this way, too. It does appear to make good sense to get the product sample to evaluate quality before going forward - I like that idea. Thanks for posting this.

That's very useful. I've heard so much about how profitable FBA is and it's generally made to look straightforward which I suspected it wasn't. Thanks for sharing your experience and good to know you're doing well with it.

Well, an excellent post and driven from real experience. If were you I would consider developing a digital product on the right way to do FBA. You have the knowledge to impart to others and you have authority to give some very useful advise and a roadmap to success with FBA.
All that knowledge is likely to cost far less than the mistakes people could make going it alone without it.

May I suggest that mods delete all the unhelpful thank you posts, not only on this thread, but the practice is now widespread through the forum.

With few people bothering to read more than the last one or two posts, the proliferation of those pointless posts filling the pages makes it even less likely that useful posts will be read.

Looked into selling on Amazon in the past, but couldn't find the time I needed to make it work. Glad to hear things are working out for you, 10k in a month is a great achievement!

I'm sure FBA is great if you know how to do it, but seems like way too much work for me when I am making over 10K per month right now and all I have to do is buy a few solo ads every day to build my list and then spend about 15 minutes a day writing an email and then pushing the "send" button.

That's just me, though. I'm a lazy stoner who wants to work as little as possible.

That's why I'm an affiliate. I can't even be bothered to create products or do product launches. I don't really see the point when I can just let someone else do all the heavy lifting and then I can just promote the product and make between 50%-100% commissions on it. Although, with FBA you are basically letting Amazon do all the heavy lifting, so I like that about it.

IMO, becoming an affiliate in the "make money online" niche and building a massive list in that niche is the absolute easiest way to crush it online. A lot of marketers look down on the MMO niche, but I never really let that bother me because I never really cared what other people think as long as I'm making bank.

Maybe that makes me appear shallow and uncaring. That's not the case. I love helping people, but the bottom line is I'm in this to MAKE MONEY. Anyone who claims that they created a digital product solely to "help others" is full of crap. I'll NEVER apologize for admitting that I'm all about making that green.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't even want to hear the words "physical product." Digital products are the way to go, and with SO many people looking to make money online, I'll always have a captive audience and plenty of fresh leads to sell to.

However, I applaud your success. 10K a month is nothing to sneeze at.

I still think good old fashioned email marketing is the way to go. I've been tearing it up for almost 8 years now and I'm loving it more every day.

Great job establishing a successful online business. You are among the 2% who actually make it online, and that's something you should definitely be proud of.
