Ideas for a brand new target market (Myanmar/Burma) - The last frontier

The country of Myanmar (previously called Burma) is often described as the last frontier country in the world (well maybe North Korea might be in the running!).

Until last year, the country was heavily sanctioned by many western countries, the USA, EU countries etc, because of the oppressive military government. So it was very difficult for the local population (and foreigners who live in the country), to source even the most basic of products.

I know this for a fact, because as an international school teacher, I've been living and working in Myanmar since 2012. In those early days, if I spotted a pack of British cheese for sale in the local minimart, I'd buy up the whole supply, because I knew that it would be a long time before I found the next pack.

Access to many western websites was blocked, not by the Myanmar government, but by the websites themselves, wary of allowing access to their websites by users within Myanmar. So Paypal and Ebay blocked access, even suspending user accounts if you so much as tried to log in from Myanmar.

Yes, you could use a VPN, but unless you had a delivery address outside of Myanmar, you could never buy anything.

However, everything has now changed! Since last Autumn/Fall (2016), all sanctions have been removed and the country is wide open for import and export of goods and services. (Although many websites still block access and I regularly have to send them emails to request that they keep up with the news and remove the block).

So now you have a country of 54 million people, eager for education, and with a raidly increasing demand for products and services, thanks to the new 4G mobile networks and internet access.

But while the population can see all these new products and services on their smartphones, actually delivering the product or service to them is way behind.

So.... as a British guy who lives and works in Myanmar, what advice or suggestions do you have for harnessing this untapped market of 50+ million people? Services are probably the easiest to deliver (online/download etc).

What product or service should I market to the people of Myanmar?

Let's discuss !

How many of them buy online?
Do they even have CC or access to other payment methods?

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

5 years ago, mobile phone SIM cards cost upwards of $1,000 USD and internet access from internet cafes was extremely slow (as in 15 minutes to display 1 webpage - I know, I did it!).

But the country is moving forward very rapidly. There are now 3 new mobile networks offering fast and cheap mobile internet and online applications.

The feedback that I get from reading the relevant industry news is that many people want to buy online, but there is little on offer that is accessible.

This is because the banking system is not yet fully linked up to Visa and other international payment systems. You still cannot do an international funds transfer...

So buying goods/services from existing online retailers, or trying to link Paypal to a Myanmar bank account will not work.

This is actually a plus point for my ideas. Myanmar does have its own online payment system (MPU), that is linked to all the major banks in the country. It is very easy to buy something online using MPU, and the merchant website receives funds into their Myanmar bank account.

So I am in the position of being physically in Myanmar and having a Myanmar bank account, AND also having international Visa cards and Paypal payment access (through my Paypal account in Thailand).

So the situation right now is akin to a walled garden, where there is absolutely minimal competition from other service/product suppliers, because they have to be present in the country (to have an MPU online payment solution and local bank account)

IMO, lack of competition from local suppliers is a two edged sword. To me, the great advantage of Internet business is the "reach" that it allows around the globe. If you only do business in your "walled garden" as you call it, you will be limited to customer markets, suppliers, and the advantages of a growing business tide that lifts markets around the world through innovation and progress.

I'm certainly not trying to discourage you from dealing in your own country . . . I'm just saying that you may have difficulty getting traction locally because your markets are in their infancy and it takes time for Internet buying acceptance and comfort by consumers. The public here in the U.S. went through the same growing pains in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Compare those years with today and you see a much more mature "buying audience" and established Internet companies.

      The best to you,

    So educate them.

    A Udemy type site maybe?

    A collection of video tutorials?

I would think the potential subjects would be almost unlimited.

The best things to sell obviously are courses aimed at people making money and those that involve education - a very wide field. Warrior+ and JVZoo have low cost money making offers.

What are the already established social networks in Myanmar? Is there a new virgining online scene being developed, find out who the other startups are and join with them.
