How to sell erotic audio for women?

Hi!

I'm here to ask for your advice on how to sell my products.

I'm producing erotic audios for women (MP3 files). Every recording is like a short erotic story where the main character is talking directly to a woman listening to the audio. The purpose behind it is to create an erotic fantasy inside of her head, turn her on, and make her come.

Some info about my customers:
- female (i bet you did not expect that),
- 30 - 45 years old,
- from USA (but also UK, Canada, Australia - in this order),
- single or in a relationship but sexually unsatisfied.

This type of erotica is very fresh and few women know about it. So it's really hard to sell this stuff.

A few ideas I have:
- Find an erotic store to partner with, sell my content on their website, and share the income - the main problem here is that most stores sell physical stuff and their websites aren't ready for selling MP3s so I guess they won't be interested.
- Upload my files to anything with an affiliate program (an erotic store, amazon etc.), then find every blogger and website with content like erotica for women, sex education for women etc. and ask if they would like to sell/promote my stuff on their websites using any affiliate program.
- Contact with companies producing erotic toys for women (eg. Lelo) and find a way to work with them. Maybe create some exclusive content for their customers.

Right now I've managed to dominate "Erotic hypnosis for women" niche and that's where all my current sales come from. But this niche is very small and I want to grow.

I have really great feedback from my customers. So I know for sure that the products are very good. But I'm really struggling with getting new customers.

It would be wonderful if you could share your thoughts on this issue of mine and help me a bit with a few ideas.

Even if you don't I still appreciate your time.

Thanks!

Pardon my bluntness, but it sounds like you're selling the equivalent of jack-off material for women, to be used while they masturbate. Am I close?

    No judgments.

What do these women do, watch and read when they aren't practicing self-gratification?

For example, Trojan came out with a fingertip vibe for women awhile back. The ads appeared during soaps, game shows, dating shows, even shows about murder on networks like Investigation Discovery and the Justice Network. Adam & Eve (an erotic product seller) seem to be everywhere these days, but they are targeting committed couples, primarily straight.

I'm guessing that the women in your target audience probably aren't quite that brazen. Perhaps instead of selling the mp3s, which could be embarrassing if found on a phone, tablet or other device, you might investigate a subscription service (here's a name - G-Spotify ) with a relatively innocuous name. The digital equivalent of the "discrete plain brown wrapper".

I've searched for it but can never find it

      Exactly!

"Sex in the city", "Women's health", "Cosmopolitan" - These 3 came to my mind just now. But this is a very good question and I've never asked it my self. Thank you so much!

      Adam & Eve
I've tried to contact with them. No response... But I will try again.

which could be embarrassing if found on a phone
That makes sense. Right now I'm selling my products only via my website where women can stream the audio. So there is no reason to download. But I can't afford paying a developer for coding an affiliate program on my www. But I will think about it.

Thank you. This is very helpful!

You and I are in a similar industry. Same genre. Same target audience, different media. I write novels, rather then record audio.

Yes, the niche is very small. I know the torment of a small niche. My own niche (Yaoi/gay erotica for women) is rather large, but the sub-genre within in that I focus on (sissification/transvestite, BDSM/CBT, Monster Porn & Unicorn Porn - the genre is literally transvestite Elves being kidnapped and raped by horses - not a lot of demand for that) has just about almost exactly 7,000 readers world wide, meaning I know EXACTLY who my target audience is, but there are not many of them to target. Oh well. I knew that before I got started, so I knew what to expect.

It sounds like you are dealing with far more mainstream pairings, so you should be able to branch out into a wider audience once more people know your product is out there.

Somewhere around here on the Warrior's Forum, was a post, written maybe 3 or 4 years ago, can't remember which user or what the specific topic was... but there was a thread, something to do with dropshipping, that had listed a bunch of adult entertainment sites for internet marketers. It had focused on adult toy drop shippers mostly. But what it was was a list of adult entertainment sites that were open to internet marketing and had drop shipping programs, and affiliate programs. The list is possibly outdated, but if you do a forum search for it, you should be able to find it and it should prove a wealth of resources to help you find sites with affiliate programs and possible sites willing to sell your product to their customers.

One heads up for you... you possibly already know, but just in case you didn't or in case someone else reading this was considering getting into the adult entertainment industry... you want to tread lightly with Google AdSense and AdWords. You can you AdSense on a site that sells Erotica, providing the ads are not placed on any page that has adult content on it.

Also, schema meta date tags, etc, has a full list of meta data for sites within adult entertainment. If you haven't done so already, be sure to add those to your website. You can find info on them here:

    https://schema.org/LocalBusiness

    https://schema.org/EntertainmentBusiness

    https://schema.org/AdultEntertainment

Use meta data from all 3 of the above combined, to help increase traffic to your site.

Also, as you are dealing with audio books more or less, these ones might be helpful as well:

    https://schema.org/CreativeWork

    https://schema.org/Book

    https://schema.org/MediaObject

    https://schema.org/DigitalDocument

Note sure from what you say, if you've already published them somewhere or not, but if not have you considered publishing these via Amazon's audio book service? Here is the link to that in case it's something you are interested in looking into Download Audiobooks with Audible.com, this would make your products available to Amazon Associates (affiliate marketers using Amazon to monetize their website). A lot of Erotica sites list ebooks via Amazon product links; getting your audios on Amazon, would open your product to them.

Amazon is about to remove their ban on the NEXUS Tax sates meaning 28 states previously not allowed to use Amazon affiliate links on their sites will be doing so next month. It goes into effect in 4 days. Amazon should see a mass flooding of new sites promoting product links, now would be a good time to get your products on Amazon.

Before the Nexus Tax ban, most of my income was from Amazon (Maine was one of the states, banned from the program) From 2004 to 2013, my book review blog was one of my biggest incomes, fully funded by links to books on Amazon. I took the blog offline when Amazon cut Maine off the program, but in 4 days, my blog is going back online and I'm going to be doing book reviews again. There were some 14,000 book review blogs shut down by the Nexus Tax ban that are planning to go back online next week when Amazon reopens their affiliate program to all those states they banned in 2013. A lot of us book reviewers read, review, and promote Erotica. What you are describing is basically an audio books, I think you'd be able to find quite a few Erotica reviewers looking for new products right now with Amazon just 4 days from reopening the affiliate program for us 28 states that got cut out in 2013.

If your products are not for sale on Amazon yet, I'd defiantly look into getting them on their and then actively seeking out every book review blog that reviews Erotica and uses Amazon affiliate links.Erotica is a big seller on Amazon.Even small niches do well there. Amazon's really the best place to sell Erotica when you get right down to it.

Exactly. The niche is small not because women are not interested in this type of erotica. They simply don't know it exists.

Somewhere around here on the Warrior's Forum...
It would be very valuable. Thanks, I'll do some searching.

you want to tread lightly with Google AdSense and AdWords.
Yes, I know but I've learned it the hard way...

have you considered publishing these via Amazon's audio book service?
I'm using CDbaby to get my products to Amazon. When it's done I'll try to get them to Audible and other services with Audiobooks. I think I'll use "Author's Republic" for that since I can't work directly with Audible when I'm not from USA or UK.

There were some 14,000 book review blogs
I didn't know about these blogs. Thanks!

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your time and effort. Your post is very helpful.

Well this is the 1st time I have ever heard about this type of erotica product, i mean, i still believe watching porn is way better than listening to a MP3...

    But anyway...

Have you ever thought about getting this into an application on Appstore or Google Play? Like an app where women can get access anytime with their phones and masturbate anytime they want.

Stick the trial product with the erotic toys can be a good idea.

I saw your targeted customers' age range from 30 - 45, how about expand to 60? I mean even women from 45 to 60 have to come sometimes right... just my personal idea.

I've tried in the past to reach the owners of Literotica to suggest a service where I (and eventually others) would record audio for the stories as a paid audio-on-demand service, (splitting the revenue), but have never succeeded in getting even a basic response. It'd be such a natural fit....

The niche is very small right now but I'm 100% sure it has a potential to grow. Especially with female audience since women are more stimulated with sounds and male with visuals.

Yes I have, but money is the big problem right now. But the idea it self is very good!

      how about expand to 60?
Most of my customers are 4x but it's just because the way I find new customers. So the real age range is definitely bigger as you've mentioned.

I'm an audiobook narrator. I'm the voice pouring through your earbuds as you commute to work, sweat it out at the gym, or finish folding laundry. I'm reading you your YA, Fantasy, Inspirational Self Help, whatever you choose to listen to.

More often than not though, I'm reading dirty books to you. I've been doing this for about a year - I've recorded just over 25 titles and it's the best job I've ever had: fun, relatively easy, and just weird enough.

Yep! I do this as well. (Search for my name on Audible.com and you'll find the erotica that I've recorded.)

Plus I write software, so wkakao, if you're interested in punching through some of the tech issues you mention, perhaps we should talk off-thread.

Banned here, sure! But the Internet's a big place; just because WF (understandably) doesn't permit adult materials doesn't mean that they're banned everywhere. For example, as implied above, Amazon's Audible.com welcomes adult-oriented audiobooks, and plenty of other websites encourage sexual content, as well. Particularly pertinent to the discussion at hand, (ahem), "Different strokes for different folks!"

Advertising of adult content is totally banned on Facebook. It COULD work with AdWords but it's not that easy. There is also TrafficJunky which is adult friendly but it lacks some options in terms of targeting.

So yes, it's hard to advertise it. I believe the best way is to find someone who already has a contact with your audience like erotic stores.

But I'm still testing and figuring things out.

better opt for going with Google Adwords wherein you pay Google to highlight your website in paid section for "Erotic hypnosis for women"...it might be a bit costlier in the beginning but as sales come in (which is guaranteed in case of Adwords) you will surely have Cost Per Click or CPC lesser than what you started with...

I've made an ad where target website is just some text with an audio sample. It's "Disapproved for: Sexually explicit content"

I've made another ad with a short erotic story. Just text and a photo but it just a couple, nothing sexual. And it's working. Even though the story is very sexual.

      I don't get it.

If you have an idea how to make it work than I would be more than happy for a few tips and hints.

A few decades ago, there was a (pardon the expression) radical feminist named Andrea Dworkin. She claimed that all heterosexual sex was rape. Yet she made her living writing erotica.

She was once asked what the difference was between what she wrote and porn. Her reply was that her writing was so much better, it was literature rather than porn.

My guess is that many of the "Literotica" authors y'all are contacting hold similar visions. Which may account for the lack of response to proposals they consider beneath them. They may respond better to an ego appeal, bringing their art to the masses, rather than a crass commercial offer like a revenue split.
