Most everyone here is speaking in the wrong context. And the question is not phrased properly because the person asking it is looking at this in a one-dimensional aspect, and that's not the fault of who asked the question to begin with. The question is better posed as, is this Social Networking thing worth the effort? Here's why. As quoted above, many people actually use multiple platforms, like Facebook, Twitter and there are many others out there. Then, as the gentleman who has multiple users in different social networking platforms said that he finds the platform with the smaller number of users sells more. Hmmmm, bigger is not better here? ![]() The fact is, if you aim for Twitter, you are aiming at a VERY narrow channel, especially because there are far many users at Facebook and a lot more LOGGED IN time and engagement with all the apps (Dr. Evil's wife is hooked on FB). Now, so you're saying to yourself, what kind of crack is this new version of Dr. Evil on? Well, I'm not really because if you're going to consider, Twitter, you might as well consider Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Xanga and all the "Social Networking" services covered in this list: Ping.fm / Supported Social Networks Why consider all those? Again, because different strokes for different folks and you wanna cover a blanket across the generic term "Social Networking" rather than confining a strategy to just Twitter. AND, while you're there at Ping.fm, sign up for an account, it's free, and once you sign up for the account, you can go in and setup that ping.fm account to not only post to TWITTER, but to every single account on that platform above by sending ONE single email to a specific email address and it will even post to blogger, wordpress.com, custom wordpress blogs, etc. If the lights aren't going off right now that you could be SKIPPING the login and do ALL your blogging BY EMAIL and not just posting your content and links to Twitter, but also distribute it through ping.fm to Facebook, Linked, MySpace, Xanga to ALL of your branded accounts so that you catch everyone that is using various platforms. It just takes a little bit of time to setup all the accounts on the different platforms and then HOOKING them up into your ping.fm account. Does this make sense at all folks? If yes, please let me see you nod? Uh-huh, okay people. Here's the puddin on the topping, or the other way around. :P There's this site called Social Oomph which I have no stake in but I have an account and it pumps all my other twitter and facebook accounts and schedules EVERYTHING so I load up a bunch of content on a schedule that gets PIPED through ping.fm and then goes OUT to all the services I check in my ping.fm account and bingo, it aint about Twitter no more because I now have blanket coverage on a scheduled basis to ALL the networks that may use different platform (Social Oomph lets me pre-schedule content). Think about the blog implications with the above -- you could be making blogs posts to your site while hitting ALL your social networks with them set up in ping.fm Imagine scheduling all your content to post to your wordpress without having to run some lame ass blogging script that weighs down a shared server or a dedicated server. Oh, I'll catch hell from software developers because you NOW have your formula for auto-blogging and auto-social networking and auto-twittering and it doesn't require a course. Now all you need is content and what I would suggest there is taking your content or creating 100 bite sized snippets of tips in your industry and then start loading up a scheduler (SO) to get CONTENT with sparse LINKS that are promotional scattered through. Take PLR articles, break them up. And lastly, your mental state of mind which requires that you invest at least 6 months to have this STICK and start getting noticed. You either commit to 6 months or don't do it -- period. It's like deciding whether to become known or unknown, famous or not. The choice is clear whichever you decide. But when you decide, don't give up a month later, take the first step and decide it will be something you do for at least 6 months to gain traction. It's like this gal who does Fashion Tutorials on YouTube. She is the 27th MOST SUBSCRIBED gal on You Tube and all she does it just do really really good tutorials for makeup. YouTube - DulceCandy87's Channel That's um, like 96,000 subscribers watching her do makeup tutorials. Now, do you think that she started from scratch at zero subscribers like anyone else? Absolutely. She stuck in there until what she did stuck. ![]() I don't think with her clout on YouTube that she will be quitting doing these videos anytime soon. That's the basic formally with some sprinkles of wisdom in there. |

I've built multiple twitter followings over 2000 with barely any effort, sure many may be feeding content, but it does end up bringing me traffic with only the initial work. Once I set it up, my blog feeds twitter, and the account grows. If you know what you're doing there's no need to waste a lot of time. Not using it is silly, I've set up blogs feeding twitter accounts that have made money in days, with just a few hundred followers. |

You need to automate tweeting 80% and to tweet manually 20%. Posting smart tweets and giving links to your free staff brings more targeted followers than all other tricks together. Set up 10 squeeze pages and send tweeple to those pages and you are building a list. |

Twitter is a great tool for helping businesses connect with their audience and create relationships with people. But, it is time consuming and can actually hurt you by taking away your focus from your business. I don't spend a lot of time on Twitter for that reason, I do use it, but I don't focus on Twitter alone. I would recommend that if you have an opportunity to have someone full-time handle your social media presence then do it. If not, it's not the end of the world but you will be spending a lot of time on Twitter in order to see big results. |

I tweet links to my blog posts and videos and provide updates on what's new in my life to try to keep things personal and build relationships, but it seems like everyone who follows me is a spammer, and it seems hard to build real relationships. I'm in the forex industry and maybe it's just littered with spammers, but I've yet to create more than 3 strong relationships. Any suggestions? Kris |

I've had mixed results with Twitter, but then I don't spend a whole lot of time there because it really isn't my thing. You have to be into real time chit chatter, and I can't get into that. I do enjoy seeing my blog posts and articles getting tweeted though! |

Without even reading any of the other answers I would say this Is 1 more avenue to get traffic worth the effort in your eyes? The way i see it if I can have traffic comming from many different avenues then heck ya its worth it. Just my 2 cents. |

Far too many people use twitter with auto tools, I have started cracking down and I refuse to retweet anyone that uses auto tools. I am getting very picky on who I follow back now also. I got 30 followers when I got up today and I only followed 4 back because you can tell the fake accounts from the real ones. Many are abusing the system and not using it for what it was meant for, those ones that are may benefit now but in the long run they will suffer when twitter really starts to crack down. Everything I do on twitter is manual, DM's I ignore and do not even read. Retweets only done if user is actually using twitter... James |
