Building Out Online Businesses that You Can Sell

Hey everyone!

I thought it would be interesting to see who here has built websites for the sole purpose of selling them, and what your insights have been that helped you sell that asset.

My own two cents is the biggest thing to do is actually preparing the business for sale:

1. Getting your books in order (such as multiple different affiliate income streams, making sure each affiliate tracking ID is JUST for that one particular website you're trying to sell etc.)
2. Cleaning up backlink profiles in the case of authority sites or SEO based sites
3. Making sure any special deals you have in place come with the sale of the asset. For example, a dropshipping business being sold should have all of its contracts with the supplier be transferable to the new owner
4. Systemizing as much as humanly possible. On our marketplace, I see a lot of Amazon FBA owners who don't have a 3rd party doing quality assurance, instead they often ship the product to themselves which is super unattractive to a buyer (such as the digital nomad variety who might be island hopping in Bali for example).
5. Explanations for all dips in traffic or earnings - also explanations for big spikes. Was it an ad campaign you were running? Was there some kind of promo? Is it seasonality?
6. Having 6-12 months of profitability with data to back it up (including traffic analytics)

How about everyone else out there? What did you find the most useful thing you did to sell your online asset?

If you've never sold one, feel free to ask questions. I can't answer everything, but I have seen a lot of deals come through our marketplace over the last year and hopefully can help you out if you have any burning questions :-)
