Directory site: Free membership or not?

Hey all,

I have a new directory site project and I'm at the point of deciding how I'll go with the pricing options. First I thought about about offering everyone 3-6 months free and after this these businesses could decide between 2 different monthly packages that I'd price well. But then I started thinking about giving everyone a chance to have a free account (with quite many limitations) to give the site the possibility to become really popular. After some thinking this seems really the only way to go about it. Am I on the right tracks here?

There is already a directory site with the same idea but the site looks like it's 15 years old and it doesn't even have any photos on it. There is a "Premium" option and the only difference it makes is that you're in a category tagged "Premium". About 16% of the companies still pay over 50 dollars a month for this (which I think is crazy).

It's the first time I'm creating a directory site and I'd be really happy for any tips you might have.

Thanks.

I thinks that if you want to become your Directory site popular online then you must have to provide a Free membership as option for the user who want to list his link on your web directory with some limitations. And it should be beneficial for your site and gain huge online traffic.

Why would I pay you to be listed in your directory? What do I gain?

I would likely give free accounts and limit them, but also at the same time email market to them and display ads to them to find other ways to optimize the free accounts.
