QUICK POLL: Which Would You Choose?

Hey everyone,

Quick test.

Just answer below please. Only need 10 responses.

Want to gather everyones opinion on some research I'm doing.

If you went to purchase a burger at a restaurant and the person taking the order asked...

"Would you like onion rings or cheese on that?"

What would you choose?

    For definitely free, yes.

    Otherwise. No, thanks.
(And think, if I want I would have ordered it).

This is has nothing to do with Traffic Fusion. At least for the purpose I want it for.

And although you may think the point of this is an up-sell (yeah its the end result), its not what its intended for.

You've already up-sold yourself though, to a steak

      Need it for comparison.

      Thanks guys.

What the he11 am I doing at Burger King? I took a wrong turn on my way to Wendy's.

I don't bother with the upsells most of the time... but every once in a while I will. If I am really hungry and they pitch a size upgrade... I'll take them up on that but only if I am really hungry.

Upsells on food they always have don't work. It has to be something new. Like BK has some new burger out now that is really good. Can't think of the name of it though.

Damn traffic fusion. Now I want to go to BK to get that burger.

Most smart marketers wouldn't bother with the "upsell". Which is why this is not the only place im testing.

The average person is not a marketer and might not realize the "upsell" like we would and the conclusion for the test is not really about the upsell, rather something else hidden in the equation.

Maybe I should go check out traffic fusion since everyone keeps mentioning it. I don't know what its about other than to put my ad on a TY page and make me more money.

Back in my burger eating days I'd say why not both. Load it up...

Do we have to pick one or the other for this poll?

You can be as creative as you want.

Which is why I didn't put up definite answers.

BTW- I had White Caslte the other day. I normally don't like it, but those A1 burgers where pretty good.

Thanks for everyones input. Just doing a little testing for myself to see how the numbers react in the real world.

Besides the upsell itself, does any smart marketers here know why this upsell technique works so well?

Maybe these fast food restaurants have been doing it all along, but I haven't notice until now.

They are pretty slick at getting you to comply with their requests...

The upsell is minor compared to all the other stuff they do. There are very subtle things they do that actually warm you up for upsales.

The next time you go through a drive through at BK... look at how they have their drive through setup. It used to be you would see menus with nothing but text of all their food options.

Now they have pictures of the food. On one side you might see the combo meals... these are upsells from just getting a single item such as a burger. On the other side you will see pictures of deserts... and special limited time only items... like the burger I mentioned above.

Even before you actually get to the drive through you see all these posters in the Windows for various food items. These are warmups for a sale. Even before you get to the restaurant you are seeing sales pitches like "Double Cheeseburger Combo Only $2.99 for a limite time only!" on their billboard sign or whatever you want to call it.

BK goes a step further. They have an automated pitch as soon as you get to the intercom. For each phase of the day you will get pitched their deal of the day like 2 Croisant Sandwiches during breakfast.

By the time you get around to paying for your food... you are thinking WTF just happened? I only wanted a cheeseburger for .99. Now I'm paying 7.95 for a combo meal upsized. Speaking of which their menu even has downsells with their dollar menu.

Thats right and there is also a lot of psychology that goes into a "happy meal". Did they just call it that for the hell of it? Nope, its just there marketing at work.

Notice the colors in McDonalds? Its suppose to evoke an emotional response from you.

        Now back to the test...

So normally a fast food joint would upsell you and ask, "Would you like fries with that?"

Its a Yes Or No question..

What I've notice Wendys doing recently (from memory) is they would ask, "

"Would you like a medium or a large?"

Since this is not a yes or no question, people are more than likely to answer "medium" or "large", instead of anything else.

But what about the Regular/small size?

Is that not an option? It is, but they don't give it to you. Its very subtle, but effective. It happens to quick when your on line or at the drive threw that the average person wouldn't notice it and they would answer "medium" or "large" and automatically raise the average sale price.

And the other day at White Castle, when I got my A1 burgers they asked,

"Would you like onion rings or cheese on that?"

I paused a moment and said "what" ( i didnt want either, but they caught me by surprise) - so I told him neither.

I just started noticing restaurants doing this.

They used to ask "Would you like cheese with that"? Thats a yes or no question. Now they swtich it to, "Would you like onion rings or cheese with that?"

So how does this fit into marketing?

Giving someone 2 options will increase response in your favor as opposed to asking a yes or no question.

How can you fit this into your marketing plan?

Well if you sell information products you can offer 2 choices.

You can sell the physical product for say 197 - or offer the e-book version- download for only $47- which is an instant download!

Using real world techniques proven by multi million/ billion dollar companies can also be useful online.

I find it fun to spot marketing tactics in the real world and just wanted to share my experience.

Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

It's called the alternative choice close. Sales people have been using it
with great success for decades.. probably longer... lol

Never ask a question that offers only a yes or no answer... always frame
the question so it has a yes or yes answer. They can still choose no but
the power of suggestion causes the mind to flash on a picture of what
you're offering... once the picture is in their mind the other senses take
    over.

By the way.... I'll have the cheese...

Exactly Tsnyder. The way fast food places use these techniques just caught me by surprise because I don't remember them doing it before. They seem to be getting a little aggressive now, lol..

Just wanted to provide a real world experience how it is done effectively and that it can be done effectively with internet marketing.

Little techniques can make a big difference.

I don't see many people offering physical products to increase value and sales (maybe im wrong), so I think if someone wants to increase conversions, this is a proven method (provided all your other marketing is taken care of correctly.) It doesnt have to be with a physical product, but why not? You can even offer more value with the physical product than the ebook.

Agreed... For me, physical products are where it's at for creating value.
I know there are lots of people who like to read or view things online but
I'm one of millions who like to hold stuff in their hands.

One of the first products I bought online was from the late Cory Rudl.
He offered the download PLUS shipping the actual physical book. If not
for that I wouldn't have made the purchase.

The upsell with alternative choices is simple with online products.
        Choice #1: Download the ebook
Choice #2: Download plus ship physical copy
Choice #3: The above plus video on CD or DVD

Actually that is one of the oldest sales techniques in the sales business.

It is one of the first things they teach you in sales.

Even back in the 1930s this was something that was done on a regular basis, back then they had these dime stores, and they trained the attendants to help customers with choices.

The would you like this or that, was one of the first things they showed the girls how to do, ( yep it was usually girls that had these jobs )

While it may seem like a neat sales trick, it has really been around for a long time.

Interesting post though thanks for the info.

      Tim,

I understand it may be old. But thats not the point at all. Does it matter how old a strategy is as long as it produces results and money?

In regards to the fast food places around me, they just started using this technique, which is why I mention it. Not because its revolutionary or new, but because it relates to a real world experience happening now. And it is also very effective.

Its not that its a neat sales trick. Its not that its old. Its that it actually works and will make you more money if you do this correctly.

I know everyone in this forum is not using this strategy or even using it correctly.

And, Tim, not everyone is master salesman like yourself

Do you have any new sales/ influence tricks that you might be able to share with the WF? Help us make more money for free
