Refusing to embrace recession?

So many motivational speakers like to say things like "I refuse to participate in the recession" or similar rhetoric.

As a business owner I don't like to put myself into the defeatist mindset of giving in and blaming the recession for why a product won't sell.

Having said that I think you are absolutely crazy to ignore the simple fact that while you may not participate in the recession your customers are participating. The media tells them there is a recession so they slow down their spending.

As a marketer you need to embrace this mentality. People haven't stopped spending they are just spending less. Products under $20 are selling like mad. Sometimes you just need to change your price to embrace the millions of people who do participate in the recession.

What do you think?

    Hi Brad,

I agree that there are many potential customers who
are participating in the recession, and lower-priced
    products are often more appealing.

However, I think that some niches are not quite as
affected by this and higher product prices are the
    norm and probably even expected.

For example, I sell one particular product to contractors
and recently raised the price... which has resulted in
    more sales (go figure!)

There's nothing wrong with making savvy adjustments according to the economic climate.
