I've been considering changing all my lists to require email only for opt-in, so I did a little test... It was a small split test for one of my lists using Aweber. One opt-in form had both name and email for the new subscriber to fill in and the other had only email. I was expecting at least a slightly higher conversion rate on the Email Only form, but the opposite happened. Email Only - 82.4% Signups per unique display Name & Email - 88.5% Signups per unique display Now this test did run for only about 100 unique displays so to be really accurate a few hundred more should see it, but it is interesting that the addition of the name box didn't make a significant difference, and maybe even helped. I think I'm going to stick with name and email for all my opt-in forms. I'm guessing the name box makes the offer look more legitimate. Thoughts? |

Do you mind me asking what niche or market the test was conducted in? I suspect (and I could be wrong) that when dealing with internet savvy people and Internet marketers, you may get a higher opt-in rate on email only squeezes, but on more generic niches, perhaps the difference would not be much different as you mentioned. |

Keep us updated. Only 100 unique displays isn't enough. Like EndGame mentioned, if you could give us a little information about the page it might help put it in perspective. I'm in the middle of doing the same test, as soon as I start running it I'll try to remember posting my results here. I should be getting a couple hundred uniques per day for testing the results. |

I don't think one extra form field makes much difference. Most people don't mind typing few extra characters there. That is why there is not difference between both results. . |

There's a good possibility that when dealing with IM prospects, not asking for a first name makes you appear less savvy in their eyes, as in, "What am I going to learn from this guy, he doesn't even know how to send personalized emails". :-)
