Can Someone Explain Article Syndication?

I always thought AS was submitting articles to ezinearticles, hubpages, goarticles, etc. After reading some threads, it is apparent that is not what article syndication is. Can someone enlighten me?

"For a content marketer, it's better to be syndicated than to syndicate."

"To be syndicated" is to write or video something so interesting that others site publish and re-publish it and you get credit for it. "Going viral..."

Many here refer to "syndicate" only as publishing your articles or videos on others sites in exchange for money or a trade of articles. You get "author credit" in the form of links. That's what you mention and that's not wrong but there is often more to syndication online.

legally publishing someone else's content, typically in exchange for a fee or credit. The modern buzzword "licensed content" is often used interchangeably with "syndicated content....
When you are surfing sites online you will often see the bottom part of a page taken up with links to 'related articles', "articles of interest", etc. Those are the result of content syndication networks such as Taboola and Outbrain. I know what those are but not in detail that I can explain them.

Some background on syndication (not my site)
