Default Keywords As Domain Name Importance

I know search engines put weight on domain names, and though the weight has not been reduced, there has been many other factors receiving popularity/weight, such as backlinks, social network relations, blog, etc.

So how important is having the keyword in your domain name for PPC and organic advertising?

Understandably, people need to relate to the domain name, preferably a domain keyword that is in the respective niche. But then again, how important is that? For example, what does 'Go Daddy' have to do with domain name registration and website hosting?

I would like to get your thoughts, opinions, facts, etc. I have also created a poll on the subject and would appreciate your vote.

A lot of what you are talking about has to do with 'branding'.

Yahoo, Google, Amazon, et al, had the resources, think VC, to last long enough that their names became a pseudonym for the niche.

If you're a little guy this strategy won't work. Hence, having a keyword rich domain name gives you a leg up on being an authority in the niche.

You're less likely to trust your money on a dog training ebook from a site like SuzysBestBrownieMix.com than you would be for SuzysBestDogTraining.com, as an example.

This applies organically as well as for paid ads.

I'd say it's a big advantage in organic advertising and somewhat of an advantage in PPC. For an example of organic advertising do a search on Google for "ppc spy", with quotes there's only about 16,000 competing pages, but there's a domain that's been sitting there with absolutely no pages for several months now. I've even done the same thing, but not quite so long.

For me, a keyword rich domain name is absolutely essential.

I have had pretty good success at getting a nearly
immediate rank when I start a new site (such as
"greatkeywordphrase.com") and then get a few trusted
links to it.
