Digital Marketing Advice Needed

Hello,


I am seeking to change my career to digital marketing. I am interested in going back to school and would love some feedback on where most of you gained your education. I would also love to know if the university/school made a positive impact on your resume as it relates to gaining employment. Any advice provided would be greatly appreciated.

    Before you run off and do a marketing degree you might want to checkout what DigitalMarketer does in relation to some short certified courses in digital marketing.

    The courses they run might help you narrow down your area of interest.

    They also have a jobs board and you might want to search through their certified partners and call a few and ask them what they think as they are in the business of digital marketing.

    An MBA can always come in handy when trying to impress.

      Thank you for the feedback. I am currently looking at a certificate program through Duke University or Simplilearn. Dukes program is pretty expensive ($6k) considering it's not a masters certificate. I am trying to determine the best route to take. I truly appreciate the advice you've provided.

        The best route depends on whether you are intending to gain employment with an agency or a business or if you are going out to start your own business or try to succeed online.

        You will find most of the viewers and respondents within Warrior Forum are self educated in the online space and most work for themselves or are trying to.

        This was one of the reasons I suggested contacting real marketing agencies if you are thinking about heading down the route of being an employee.

        If you are going the employee route you should investigate internships as you can sound out the availability of employment and also undertake study at the same time.

        I'll give you an example.

        One of my staff has two accounting degrees and just obtained their MBA

        Their interest is in forensic accounting and auditing. The next step for them is to become a Chartered Accountant.

        They currently are on a 12 week placement three days a week as an intern with a large accounting firm. They are gaining experience in the auditing side yet they still work for me doing a mix of tasks ranging from accounting, design work, sales and customer service.

        If you are seeking employment you need to find out what the potential employer wants not what people who don't run marketing agencies say.

        Call and speak to a few.

        Reach out and ask within the industry.

        Even if you do intend to pursue a self-employed career in digital marketing it always helps if you gain some experience working with others which is why getting some work inside an agency could help you in the long term.

        One of the reasons I mentioned the DM courses is they have clients like Etihad, Harper Collins, Uber etc sending their teams through the certification programs because then they are all on the same page when it comes to the whole digital marketing sphere.

        It is best to learn from people who really do digital marketing and have a knowledge of all aspects rather than people who have just been successful at one small part of the equation.

    I learned digital marketing by doing it myself, by buying courses from people making millions online.

    I often talk to people that went to school to learn digital marketing and to be honest, they have no clue what they are doing.

    Trust me, if the teacher knew how to do online marketing, he wouldn't be teaching at 50k per year a bunch of students, he would create his own online course and make millions form it.

    Online education: trial and error, following top bloggers from my niche....error....more error.....a lot more error ....and then, success.

    Then, I learned more and more from Warrior, I bought some eBooks, enjoyed some courses and just did a ton of personal development to raise my vibe so I could face my fears, and when I faced my fears, however uncomfortable I felt, it became easier to both learn and succeed online.

    Going to school may help you some but if you buy 1 or 2 helpful online courses and feast on eBooks, blogs and the Warrior Forum, reading and watching and studying after you take notes, you can build a thriving, profitable career through digital marketing.

    Do whatever resonates with you though. Some folks prefer the online learning forum and others prefer the classroom setting, going the traditional route. I preferred to learn while circling the globe and drinking banana shakes on the beach More comfy to study at home, at least for me.

    On the flip side, this journey can be uncomfortable. But so can any journey in life when you leave your comfort zone.

    Having qualifications will always be good but if you learned by doing it aswell you would learn so much faster. When it comes to getting employed qualifications are always good but if you had hands on experience to show you've also been doing to the work and can do it well, that can only be a good thing.

    It's a good thing that you're considering several options of education but specific in the internet marketing niche the best way (in my opinion) to start is to learn from the "A List" crowd of now-legendary copywriters like John Carlton,
    you can also buy courses and step by step you will improve your copy skill.

    I have no degree in digital marketing of any sort. I have learnt from my mentors to keep things simple so there is not too many moving parts or wasting time on fluff. If you want to make money online or learn about how we marketers make money or any aspects on Internet marketing you are in the best forum in the world to learn from. My best advice for you is:
    1. Go to Warriorplus.com and ask a vendor for an affiliate link to make money online.
    2. Once you have those links or the link to promote then we move to step 3.
    3. Join an Autoresponder service such as Aweber.com.
    4. Look for the vendors swipe files or emails to use when you send emails to your list.
    5. You must create a squeeze page with a headline 'how to make money online' as example but add something catchy.
    6. The squeeze page is linked to the Autoresponder service.
    7. Within the Autoresponder service, you want to be able to send the emails to your list. Speak to Aweber, they are willing to help.
    8. So your main objective is to build your list in the 1000s by attracting targeted subscribers to your (enticing) squeeze page.
    9. Then send emails through the Autoresponder service to your subscribers.
    10. The money will start rolling in.

    To be honest, I think going back to school would be a waste. If you want to learn the basics of marketing, sure, go back to school. If you want to do marketing management, get an MBA. But for digital marketing, the best way to learn is do it yourself. The tools and techniques we use change so often, so fast, that schools can't catch up. If you go to school now, the techniques you learn by the time you graduate will be obsolete.

    I used to work in IT at few advertizment companies. I don't remember any PM or VP who would have special digital marketing education. All of them had technical education related to IT.
    I guess special education will not change much for you. If it will be game changer, those guys will get it.

    Yes, the rich know how to make money and laugh at the rest who don't have a clue.

    Or do courses that only teach theory, and are typically only good on a resume.
