.Info's run for around $3, are there any downsides to these? I have bought a few but do you think the SE's prefer .com's over .info's somehow? Curious about people's ideas/experiences/etc. Thanks!

      People don't like change...
So .com is always the best and most memorable.

Doesn't matter a whole lot though

.coms will rank higher if you use keyword rich domains. Ive done a lot of testing so trust me on that.

Nothing wrong with .infos but if I had a choice Id go for keyword rich .com

The reason you don't see a lot of them ranking on 1st page is because there are MILLIONS of websites LESS that have a .info. My website ranks just fine for some pages and its a .info. The thing that you should be focusing on is content and quality link building from other search engines and websites. Google is not the bearer to all traffic on the WWW.
.com is just easier to remember. Also if someone else own yourdomain.com, people can easily go to that URL instead. If you don't care about your domain name being memorable, .info would do fine.

Dot com is the preferred extension if you're doing business online. It is meant for commercial enterprises. Most (but not all) of the top businesses have dot coms. I went through the top 500 commercial sites (by popularity) recently and the vast majority of them employed dot coms.

I haven't seen any evidence that the SEs discount or penalize dot infos; however, there are some very good reasons why getting a dot com is an advantage to you.
              1. All things being equal, dot com is the most valuable extension when you decide to sell your site. It's evident from the sales that are taking place - dot coms command higher prices because of their scarcity and they are the preferred extention.
              2. Others have already mentioned they are the defacto extension. If folks can't remember your URL, most often they will try "dot com" which is where you want to be.
              3. Dot coms can be registered just as cheaply as any other extension. You can find $.99 domain promotions right now online.
              4. If you own the dot info domain chances are pretty good that someone else already owns the dot com version, which means you're going to lose traffic to them - I've tested the water here and know that it happens (maybe a lot, maybe a little).
              5. Great dot coms are still available to register in every niche. If the dot com name you want is not available - don't settle for an alternate extension - instead search for a new name. It's easy to use free software that will help you see what dot com domains are available to register right now. Try Impossibility and Lean Domain Search for starters.
Yes, you can use other domain extensions . . . but the point is . . . you don't have to! Don't merely settle for less - get a little creative and find a great dot com - it's easy!

.coms do not rank any higher but they do give an air of quality to the site more so than a .info.

People automatically think a website will end in .com and do not recognise .info due to shear numbers of them that have been registered.

Spread over a year the price difference is absolutely neglible, so I would go with a .com if the right domain for your needs is available.

. info is a top level domain and i have never had a problem ranking them in the past. i have found that they carry the same weight as .com. if you want search engine traffic only and clickable link traffic, .info domains are a great cheap alternative to .com domains.

if you are looking to brand the domain name though, it's always best to get a .com

I'd stay away from .info names

    Why?

They have long been associated with spam sites, scam sites, or ridiculously low value sites.

Spend the extra cups of coffee on a .com name

Think of it this way, if you're so focused on reducing your business costs to ZERO, you won't feel much emotional URGENCY to RECOUP your investment by putting in the RIGHT AMOUNT OF WORK into your business.

    Get skin in the game.

Invest in your business the right way.

Though the rate of the .com is high than the .info, there is no doubt about it that the .com is better than the .info for any business. You can take the .com without any hesitation. Thanks a lot.

.INFO is Intuitive - The Internet is about information. An "info" address is ideal to communicate information to people who are looking for it. Research indicates that people are attracted to domain names they can readily understand (and remember).INFO is readily understood in multiple languages, giving these addresses universality unavailable in any other domain. Over 437,000,000 pages of .INFO content stored in Google. .INFO names are perfect for search engine submittal .INFO growing in Asia. #4 largest "generic" Top-Level Domain on the Internet (after com, net, org). There are 70 million more names available in .INFO than in .com.

However, Keep your current domain (.COM), AND use a .INFO for specific marketing programs or products.
