Questions About Paypal Donation Button for an Individual to Raise Funds

Hello fellow warriors,

I just want to ask about this NOTE (below) from paypal upon creating Donor button. Does this mean if you are an individual raising funds (not an organization or affiliated with any fundraising organization), I cannot withdraw the donations? What if I am just an individual and want to raise funds from donations? Can I still use the paypal donation button and be able to withdraw whatever comes in? What options do I have? Thank you.

Note: This button is intended for fundraising. If you are not raising money for a cause, please choose another option. Nonprofits must verify their status to withdraw donations they receive. Users that are not verified nonprofits must demonstrate how their donations will be used, once they raise more than $10,000 USD.

Just a brief history:
I want to raise funds for my cancer treatments. I was diagnosed of cancer last year and under treatments. Since what I make online is not enough for me and my family, I thought of raising funds for my treatments. I am not from the US so I cannot run Gofundme campaign.

Instead of just asking for donation,I want to give something back. I created a website with inspirational quotes posted daily and also with free subscription of daily quotes. Reading inspirational quotes and bible verses helped me stay positive and so I want to spread the positive vibes to others too. Can I use the paypay donation button here and be able to withdraw it?

Thank you very much. I used to make enough money online from affiliate marketing but now things are not that good. This is the first time putting donation button on my website and take my chance and test it. I am embarrassed about it but I have to do something while in my treatments and figuring out how to make enough money again online.

    Raquel, the note you got is a result of crooks running fake charities and scammers playing on peoples' heartstrings much like the Gypsy "broken vehicle" scams still being run at rest stops on US Interstate highways.

    If you read carefully, you don't have to justify anything until you hit $10,000 as long as you are not portraying yourself as a registered non-profit. Even then, it just says you'll have to tell them what the donations are for. Just my opinion, but as long as your 'solicitation' is honest, you aren't trying to fool people, you should be okay.

    Since you are offering something in return, your button may likely be considered more like a tip jar than a donation. You might also describe it as a "pay what you want" product offer.

    Have you tried contacting Paypal and asking them the best way to implement your plan?

      Thank you JohnMcCabe for the reply and the time reading my post. No, I haven't asked paypal yet. I usually use paypal in receiving commission from my affiliate marketing. It's a personal account. This morning I created a new paypal account (business account) as it says I need a business acct. to run a fundraising. Yeah it's kind of bad for honest people who are in need to be affected by those scammers running fake charities

      The last I heard, paypal had a few options with this, so I never like to email paypal, but a good tip here is get them on the phone, whenever I have issues with paypal, I find getting them on the phone is much better.

        I second that; the phone is always my first option. I get much better answers.

        I mentioned email because it seems like a lot of members are terrified of speaking to someone live, and fall back on email.

    I don't agree - there's nothing "bad" about it. It doesn't say you can't raise money for your own treatments - it says at some point you will be asked to prove that's what you are doing.

    You could have upgraded your current acct to a business acct - not best option to be receiving payments commission through a personal acct.

    As John said - only Paypal can give you answers to those questions. If you are building an email list with subscriptions - or providing something of value for donations- that might change requirements. Again, only paypal can advise you about that.

    If you go the tip jar route, you don't have to explain to anyone except the IRS.

    Thank you to those who replied. Something came up and I was approved of my disability benefit (hope that is enough). I decided not to run a donation page (for now) but still created a quotes website plus promoting amazon books plus adsense.
