Anyone have any insight as to which niches work best for membership style websites?

What's the best way to find a topic to build a membership site on?

    You might want to do a statistical analysis of the topics being asked at Q+A sites like Yahoo Answers and Quora (among others)

    Cross reference this with niche commercial value and you might find yourself a few niches that have a high return on effort.

    I don't have any direct insight unfortunately. What I will tell you - from experience - is that you need to think not just about conversion, but retention.

    If you can convert 100 prospects a month, but 99 of them churn out (cancel before they are due to renew in their first month) then you have an extremely difficult business to grow.

    Essentially think about not just why this person would sign up, but what would make them stick around for 2, 3, 6, 12 months. It's much easier to keep getting paid by one customer than it is to find a new one.

    Also, with this retention concept in mind, it helps if you personally have enough passion to keep the momentum going throughout the inevitable dips in sign ups, and early days where you have little content to offer.

    Membership sites are cool, and a nice way to make money, but they are far from passive in my experience.
