Any special techniques for promoting a general article directory? Suggestions appreciated.

I think one of the best first things to do in promoting
a general article directory is charity begins at home.
While this might sound confusing on the first glance,
listen closely - EzineArticles has become what it is
today because it first cleaned up it's home so
thoroughly that word spread about how highly
effective they are, then IMers and others helped to
promote them.

I REALLY doubt if they did as much promotion
as other IMers did for them. And the more people
raved about them, the more high quality articles they
got published. And the more high quality articles they
got published, the more the search engines paid
attention to them. And the rest is history. But have
they stopped maintaining the high quality standards,
of course not. It's still "charity begins at home" for
them. And I think it will continue to be. If you clean
up your home, all else ought to be added to you,

So, like I said, you must first begin at home in
making the article directory top notch, not only in
design, structure, etc of the site but also in ensuring
only high quality articles get published in it. And if
you are really serious about the article directory, a
human review process will help.

My point is that if you work on making the article
directory VERY GOOD from the inside, the word will
spread and the promotion will become easy,
This, in my opinion, is better than building a
gazillion backlinks to the article directory or any
other promotion if and when the article directory
itself is not topnotch.
