Is there such a thing as smart retargeting?

Doing a retargeting campaign is one of those things I've never done but am about to start.

It seems that there is a lot of money wasted in cases where I have already bought, though.

For example, I'm a paid member of Digital Marketer and have been for a while. Yet, I see tons of ads all over the place trying to get me to do the $1 30-day trial.

Is there no such thing as smart retargeting where the anonymous cookie is replaced by something like an "already owns our product X so show him the upsell to product Y ads" cookie?

    Hi Mark,

There is smart retargeting and the reason you are probably getting the trial offer from DM because you are on multiple retargeting lists that have different campaigns running and you probably visit another page where they haven't added an exclusion.

When you create the audience you can choose to have people who visited a certain page or URL or you can use wildcards also which is what DM is doing now so you will start to notice they would include a keyword in their URL hat is unique to the interest group that are retargeting.

Then as they create more content surrounding that target audience they continuously get added to say the "interested in blogging" list.

The second part of the setup is to "exclude" people who have visited certain URLs so in your example it would be people who have visited the the membership area of DM Lab

I would think when they set up their retargeting they excluded people who had visited the "thank-you" or "success" page but as you visited that page a long time ago you are outside of the retargeting cookie length which is why you get the $1 offers.

Perhaps they should add another exclusion for people who visited the members area.

Molly gives a great demonstration of how they set up their audiences inside the certification course on paid traffic but I'm sure the demo may be lurking somewhere inside their lab content or might even be snippets of it somewhere on their blog.

I'll send you over a graphic that shows the setup.

    best regards,

    Ozi

    Hi Mark,

I'm not an expert, but some retargeting platforms have exclusion lists. Basically in your example you want to retarget people that have visited the sales page, but exclude the people that have also visited the download page, indicating that they have purchased the product.

. . . and of course, if you have multiple devices you're not going to be recognized.

Retargeting, to me, is a more advanced IM topic. My guess is . . . if you're on the list of a less advanced marketer (like most of us) you're going to get redundant messages that don't really apply. How many times have we been told that a prospect must see a given offer over and over again (some say 7 times) before we take notice.
