Optimising ourclient.mv to target USA - SEO Best practices?

One of our clients in Maldives want to rank their site say, ourclient.mv (with .mv denoting maldives) in Google for several keywords. They want to target another country to rank well in Google for keywords like luxury resorts maldives etc. - all with maldives at the end of the keyword.
Do you think that with an extension of .mv, it will be difficult for our client website to rank in say USA? Will buying a domain ourcient.us and redirecting it to ourclient.mv help? Or are there better ways to achieve this?
If redirecting ourclient.us to ourclient.mv helps, will it be useful to redirect say, ourclient.uk to ourclient.mv, ourclient.fr to ourclient.mv etc. - to target a few other countries as well?
