ways of promoting application or web service via forums

HI I am relatively new to forums, and I am interested what are legitimate ways of promoting application or web service via forums. Any useful tips/suggestions? Are there forums specifically designed for promotion?

You generally have to pay to promote your product. Is that what your looking for?

Some forums have areas for promotion.

If you can provide something special, you might be able to offer warriors something called a WSO (read the Warriors Special Offers forum).

Otherwise, there is a very common, and potentially effective method of promoting something in just about any forum.

That is, place the link in your signature, and provide value to the forum. If you can post something that makes people think "Wow, this guy knows what he's talking about" or "If he gives out information this good for nothing, I wonder what else he's got", then you can generate traffic to your product/service.

It's simple. A signature alone is not effective as an advertisement, even if it's in front of a targeted audience. However, if people get the impression that you are worth listening to, they will want to know what else you have to say.

...And the first place they go is your signature.
