The best way to get started is to start. There are a lot of people who spend more time thinking about getting started than actually taking action. In the beginning when lots of people don't know who you are you may have to do some work for free. Many people may not want to do this.

Doing some work for free in the beginning can help you to figure out if you're good enough and also it gives you a chance to get some testimonials. Testimonials allow you to build a reputation.

Always remember to offer lots of value and put your all into it. Build up your samples and create a professional looking website. It may start out slow, but once it takes off, it can't be stopped.

Anyway, for anyone actually looking to get into freelancing, the route will depend on the type of freelancing they want to do.

If freelance web content writing is the goal, I truly believe the best way to go about it is just to start and offer up services at an appropriate price. Practice is key, and even if it doesn't pay well at the start, there is such a high demand for web content that a new writer might as well get paid a bit while they hone their craft.

On top of that, I don't know that there's a much better investment than a subscription to Writer's Market. Small time publications won't pay like the big players, but there are so many small magazines that offer great opportunities for new freelancers who can put together a decent piece. My first published article was in a tiny Canadian poker magazine that has since gone under. It paid $100, but hey, it was a start and it provided me with a first clipping.

A writer needs to write. That's about it. You don't need published work, you simply need to show something. You can blog on sites like medium.com and LinkedIn. You can create your own eBooks. You can build a huge portfolio out of thin air.

Bonus tip: Quite a few people got a huge ROI by posting on Quora.com and building a reputation there.
