Is gaming considered a niche or too broad? Also is it a bad niche to try to monetize?

I've recently been getting into internet marketing, contrary to some advice I've heard around I would like to pursue it full time.

People say write about things you have experience in... well I've been gaming non stop the past 15 years of my life.. very little expertise or experience in other fields.

Should I begin by starting a blog about gaming?.. maybe more specifically mmo's or esports related games since that's more focused?

If so.. and I know this is the wrong mindset to have but could I make that into a 6 figure career?

Or should I just say **** it and focus on a niche and study one that's more profitable.. I was thinking of combining my blog with affiliate marketing/funnels to get comissions - that is the go to way to make money off blogs right? that and well.. email marketing either your own or someone else's products?

Would very much appreciate ANY advice.

Wordpress is certainly the best and/or most popular platform to start a blog. It's extremely flexible and easy to use. Plus, it can be used for a lot more than blogging.

One thing that is often thrown around on this forum is the phrase "just take action". But, I would encourage you to do A LOT of research before you start.

I'm not a blogger (nor would I ever want to be one). To me, it is a very slow, painful way to build an online business. However, when done correctly, it can build great authority and a great income. I just don't have the patience or desire to continuously crank out content.

With that said, I'll speak solely from a business perspective. To make money, in any business, you need a product and/or service, a customer base and a platform to connect your products/services to your customers.

I've played very few video games over the last 10 years or so. So, I can't tell you what the market is for video games - although the market is huge.

Have you researched what the market, or its niches want and need? Have you found or starred to develop products that fit what the market wants/needs?

If not, you should do a lot of research to determine if your business idea is viable. It would stink to work on something for a year or more and not see any results.

Personally, I like to work backwards and build funnels that end with some sort of high ticket item such as software, or a done for you solution. If I can find a potential competitor selling something in the $1,000-$10,000 range, I'm confident I can build a funnel that ends with a similar product.

hmm you say it's not your cup of tea.. but what is your strategy then? The part where you say building funnels for software?

Just want to clarify... because I'm interested in other strategies..
You make funnels to sell high end software that you create? Or you just get a cut through an affiliate link to sell it?

Thanks for your time, appreciate the info.

Paid traffic (Facebook, usually) --> landing page with a lead magnet --> thank you page --> link to sales page tripwire product in the $7-97 range --> upsells and/or downsells --> autoresponder with follow up emails

Software is just one of many examples of things that you could potentially sell that are perceived to be of high value.

With 15+ years experience in gaming, you're already ahead of the game (pun intended).
You can easily create a blog where you give a review about each game you've played.
You can write what you liked, disliked, and what you think would make the game better.

To monitize your blog, find out if you can become a affiilate of some of the games you
played. This will allow you to direct your visitors to certain games and when they make
a purchase, you earn the commission.

I don't think gaming is too broad at all. Both kids and adults will always play games and
the industry can be quite lucrative so there's no need to study a different niche. With your
knowledge, gaming is the perfect place to get started.

I have to disagree with the part I bolded. "Gaming" is way too broad too start in.

Think about it. Do the same people play first person shooter games like Call of Duty and Tiger Woods golf? How about gaming versions of classic games like Bridge, Hearts, dominoes or poker?

If the OP has spent a decade and a half playing video games, I'm guessing that his interest has focused on a relatively small number of game types. For the games themselves, that's where he should focus his energy. Not just affiliate sales, but his own products (see the Farmville link above).

As or the equipment, that's wide open - everything from gaming systems to accessories like controllers, monitors and PCs for gaming, whatever.

Do what you're interested in. Gaming by all means is NOT a bad niche. There are many ways you can go about monetizing gaming. I would suggest continuing with it.

Do you feel really really really passionate about the gaming niche? If so, you have the energy to dig deeper, find a sub niche and take it from there. I've found that if something is really really fun to you, you ignore other folk's fears on the topic, you'll make like-minded friends, solve probs, help folks in the niche and profits eventually follow.

As others have mentioned, the gaming market is definitely way too broad to target.Even targeting specific games can in many cases be too broad because you will encounter a lot of competition in the form of fan sites, cheat sites, and a variety other websites dedicated to specific games. Many of these kinds of fan and cheat sites are not sole operations, but actually have staff and capital behind them so they are able to offer much greater content than you most likely will be able to.

Like others have already told you, you want to solve a problem. What do gamers want to do? Some want to cheat, and some want to get virtual equipment/currency. Some want to learn how to beat a particular level, mission, or quest. There are many different goals. Even amongst cheaters, some people want to download free bots for a specific game. Some people are willing to pay for bots for that game. Others want to learn how to write their own bots or scripts for the game.

Those are just examples, of course. You should write about gaming concepts in which you have experience and/or about which you are passionate. You might want to do some research on how you will best be able to monetize a gaming site. You might do best if you just sell your own guides. You will also take a look at the potential legal implications of creating gaming sites.
