How do you keep track of all your passwords?

It is starting to get ridiculous for me now. I am getting so many blogs, article accounts, emails etc.. that it is getting annoying keeping track of them.

If I just stuck to one pc then maybe it would be ok but I like to use my laptop sometimes and get out and about.

Does anyone feel like sharing their system for keeping track of everything?

RoboForm is the probably the most used system. You can download a free vesion.

Some people use a contact manager ie Outlook and register affiliates links as well as login details.

I started with a spreadsheet which I still keep up to date as the master list but I also started using Roboform and fell in love with it - saves a lot of time when you can just log on with the click of a button and not look up the details.

I think Roboform also has a portable version which can be installed on a USB but I haven't looked into that myself.

For your websites you can usually over-ride any password that was created automatically and use something you can remember easily for all the websites.

Will robo form help me when moving between computers? I use spreadsheets at the moment but its not slick. I might buy one of those ironkeys and carry it round with me.

    ** EDIT **

Thanks Manda, i'll check out the usb version.

I use Firefox, I think it is very good at remembering passwords. Plus, I use variations of the same password for everything I do. Then when the time comes to log in somewhere, one of my variations must be right.

If you are using a spreadsheet, you are wasting an incredible amount of time.

      Use RoboForm Pro.

It keeps track of everything and you can put passwords in folders to stay even more organized.

There is no need to keep a spreadsheet at the same time. You can print a master list once in a while if you feel like you need to have it as a backup.

Seriously, though, if you have more than five passwords to keep track of and you're spending time bouncing over to Excel, looking up the password, copying it, going to the site, pasting it into their site, etc., you are wasting a lot of time that could have been spent being productive.

        I couldn't agree more.

Maintaining hundreds of user names and passwords in Excel is really inefficient, due to the time involved in finding, copying and pasting.

Like Jillian pointed out, you can print a master list of all passwords using Roboform at any time. What I do is export all my passwords once a week, and store them in a safe place. In case my PC crashes or anything else goes wrong, I can reinstall Roboform, and simply import the existing list of all passwords, and I'm good to go.

Once you use Roboform, you won't go back to Excel

        Regards,
        Mario

I use an old fashioned address book. I have had computers crash, been in the shop and I had to go to the library. If it were not for a portable book, I would have been in trouble more than once.

I don't have a problem, but If you do this, be sure the address book does not get in the wrong hands.

I have my passwords in a notepad archive. A little dated it seems but effective for me because I don't have so many.

  • I just keep them in a notepad doc. I suggest naming the file something obscure in case you ever get an unauthorized visitor. I carry them with me on my flash drive.

I love roboform but it still isn't compatible with Safari and Google Chrome...the two browser I use most often. I refuse to use IE and lately Firefox has had too many crashes for me to keep using it!

Anyone got any other ideas or products for passwords that WILL work with my browser choices?

Like someone else already said I use an Excel spreadsheet. I'd be lost without it. There are just way too many usernames and passwords to keep track of, especially the ones that are chosen for you.

        Hi,

My first post so if I get it wrong apologies!

I have used Roboform for a few years and would be lost without it.

However, sometime during the summer I upgraded my laptop to the latest Mozilla Firefox and suddenly found I had no Roboform as they had not caught up with the latest version.

But since then I have found that there is now an online version which co-ordinates between computers so all is OK now
        Check out https://online.roboform.com/

For Safari users I heard that this was an answer
Password Manager + Automatic Form Filler for Mac OS X

Don't know myself as I haven't used it.
        BTW no affiliate links here!
        I hope this helps.

Special "wallets" and tools like roboform cause a problem when your hard drive dies.
Notepad and address books are technically not secure.
Encrypted Excel spreadsheet with password may be the best option, IMHO.

Also, don't forget to cluster accounts into "business impact" categories. Tons on blogs with a couple of pages don't represent much business value, so even if they are stolen, clear text may be ok. Your hosting and domain names accounts on another hand should be handled and protected much more carefully. Don't use the same password for different business impact accounts -- e.g. never use a password from your bank account for a blog. Use some variations within the same business impact category. Never store high business impact passwords, use some mnemonic system instead. Oh, and never store medium or higher impact passwords on Internet, even your password protected mailbox.

I'm surprised it took 30 some posts for someone to suggest lastpass. Good stuff. You can log in from any computer and you don't have to worry about losing the info on your computer from viruses and stuff. It will auto fill your forms. Remember each website password. Your pass word is never stored on their site.

Who need thumb drives and spread sheets? Keep it simple. (Unless you need them for the one last pass password you need to remember.)

          Hey,

I like you move between several computers and my most effective method has been my blackberry phone. It has a special passwords folder and everytime I create a new account I add the username and password to that folder.

It is so quick to access you just type the first letter of the account you want to access so for example my clickbank account I just type 'C' and it brings up all my details.

Now I understand if you do not have a blackberry phone then this is not for you but I just thought I would point it out for anyone who does as it is a great feature that I couldn't live without now. I also back up my passwords on a memory stick just for safe keeping.

          Best of luck!

RoboForm is by far the most used and popular password managing
program available for a single computer. However, most people have
more than one computer and will need to manage their password on
those computers as well. So, what do you do?

    Here comes LastPass...

LastPass is an online password manager and form filler that makes web browsing easier and more secure.
    • Create strong passwords, knowing you only have to remember one.
    • Log into your favorite sites with a single click.
    • Fill forms in a second; stop pulling out your wallet to get your credit card number.
    • Access and manage your data from multiple computers seamlessly.
    • Securely share logins and notes with friends and let others share with you.
If I'm not mistaken, it's FREE!

I see a lot use Robo Form which is a great program which I also used for a long time however I use one now called Keypass and find that most webmasters I know use this and it is free open source yet very powerful.

If that wasn't good enough there are also some cool plugins which increase the functionality.

The real power of this program is that you can also make it portable which I find great as when I go on location I don't like leaving a footprint of my access on customers computers. Just plug in the stick and your away.

I like using the Free professional version and sync with the portable one. Its a free piece of good quality open source software.

Roboform Online, back ups all the passwords online so you can keep passwords synchronized on all computers you use.

This function uses a different password than you regular Roboform password so you are safe if your password is compromised.

    Hi,

as others have said Roboform, Also use Norton, and have a master one at Google Docs.

The one at Google docs is cool because if you are away from main computer you can check something, but word of warning do not put who uel just a bit of it that will help you remember the url.

    Hope this helps
