Default If only people would copy and paste . . .

An affiliate has complained that he is unable to login.

I told him it worked fine for me with the given password 6EJ2LCQF

He replied "it says incorrect password, the password you gave me is 6ej2lcqf"

I said "No it's 6EJ2LCQF (upper case)"

He replied "Why didnt it say upper case. This is crazy."

(he thought the password was now literally "6EJ2LCQF (upper case)"

OMG, don't they? lol

Reminds me of a sale my partner and I had awhile back. The product (some turnkey affiliate websites) came with super easy to follow instructions, but we had dozens and dozens of support tickets from people asking crazy questions.

For instance, someone asked "what program do I edit these sites with?"

If he had actually read the instructions, he would have seen that all he had to do is upload the files to his server, then add his affiliate links in the ADMIN panel of the site. There is NO actual editing of the php files.

Another guy said "I followed your instructions to a "Tea" except instead of only changing permissions on 4 folders, I changed the permissions on ALL the folders to 777. But my sites aren't working. What is wrong?"

(Yes, I swear he really said "tea" instead of "T" lol)

Well, if he had actually followed the instructions to a "T" then he would have changed permissions ONLY on the appropriate files and his sites would have worked.

And those are just a couple of examples. We had DOZENS of similar questions, all because people were trying to make it harder than it actually is.

There money is just as good and I want it too!

I've had to recently teach a couple of people how to copy and paste. They thought it was the greatest thing. In there defense being around computers all the time you tend to forget what it must be like for people that have just purchased there first computer.

It makes me laugh. But, I'm laughing at myself. Everyone begins from the same place. I had to learn that trick early on, in my Internet experience.

It's nice to be able to look back and laugh at one's self. In a couple of years, that affiliate will be chuckling at someone else's learning experience.

At work I actually do reset users passwords to Tardball#1 after they lock their account sometimes. I'll unlock the account once and if they don't get it I force a password reset...."Big T as in tard...little "a" as in...." well, you get the idea. It's probably going to get me written up one of these days but most of the time I get a laugh out of them...

You know if he didn't understand what his password was and didn't copy and paste it then the chances are he is actually probably a noob to the whole thing and has never been an affiliate of anything before, or very unlikely to have been!

He's not going to be some massive hard-hitter anyhow is he lol?

I would keep an eye on his earnings over this next week and just make sure hes not one of those who buys from his own link and then that's it!

Cheers

I think you guys take too much for granted. There is a large segment of the population that use computers everyday and don't know how to USE a computer. If you tell someone to unplug their modem.... they have NO clue what you mean. You try to describe the electrical outlet that the modem should be plugged into and they don't know what to do with it then you explain it is like the outlet that you plug the toaster into? what they ask you.

Shut down your computer. which way should I lay it, the customer asks... No sir, I did not say lay down. I need you to go to the START Menu. Thanks lady. I am at the Door of my home. No sir... The START menu is on your computer's desktop?... I could go on and on . These are very intelligent people with professional jobs... and most work from home.

That brings back some not-so-fond memories of doing tech support. The best ones were when the client couldn't power on their machine and immediately insisted it was broken and they needed a new one. They had said the "tried everything". 99 times out of 100 it was either because they didn't power on their monitor, or their tower was unplugged. Ugh

As to the stupidity - well, everyone has to start somewhere, but it had better not be where one ends up.

Yes it is true and now for the next stage in this saga.

The customer has to rebrand a field and the instructions say
"Enter ClickBank nickname"

The idea is to replace my one which let us say is 'harvey'
with his which say is 'abcdef'

He has told me the rebranding does not work.

When I look at the field it says 'harveyabcdef'

-----------------------------------------

I explained to him

"You have entered a ClickBank id looking like harveyabcdef

You need to overwrite/remove the original id of harvey"

He replied

"could you be more specific, this is getting very vague"

LOL

I wonder what was getting so very vague.

Could step-by-step instructions be of any help? Wait, I can't come up with more than one step here. Confused by this whole vagueness .

I've lost track of the number of times I have replied with some version of:

"You may want to use copy and paste to avoid the typing errors".

On the one hand, I'm entertained/saddened by stuff like this.

On the other hand, I'm glad that these folks are venturing out in to new territory.

I have to remind myself (quite often) that we all start at the beginning and that what now seems like "old hat" to some of us is still very daunting to many folks out there.

The fun part is watching those people that stick with it and become at least moderately proficient at marketing, lead generation, etc...

When this same person emails back later to share their success story, it's very rewarding.

We had a guy that joined from a public library computer because he didn't have a computer at home. After a YEAR of going to the library to do his marketing, studying, etc... he bought a computer and is now doing his internet marketing work from home.

That sort of dedication has really paid off for him. I hope many others can follow his example.

You should hear some of the stories I've seen happen.

Like the guy who used his CD tray to hold a quart of soda (it was a 32 ounce cup).

Or the guy that claimed his computer didn't work, but was in a dark house with no power.

Yep, there are some stupid ones out there.

No, that has nothing to do with being a beginner with computers. That's the 1D10T that someone else mentioned.

In defense of the guy, I think he meant why didn't it say to use upper case.

Here is the (hopefully) final step of the saga with this affiliate.

Having been unable to master the Herculean tasks of
* logging in with a password
* entering his ClickBank id in a form

he has now told me

"I must admit your response time is excellent, its a pity the
explanations for the setup isnt as good"
