An Experience With Passwords And Roboform2go

I have been using Roboform and Roboform2go for a long time. Roboform2go is my favorite. I even put all my bookmarks on it instead of bookmarking on individual computers or web browsers. When I move from computer to computer, there is no problem finding what I want, because everything looks just the same on whatever computer or web browser I use. And, there is no chance that a computer crash can screw it up.

Recently, I had to take one of my computers into the shop. I thought I might need to access some sites while I was there, so I stuck my USB drive in my pocket and took it with with me. BIG MISTAKE: I lost my USB drive. It must have happened when I pulled my keys out of my pocket as I was leaving the shop.

When I got home, I realized what had happened. I immediately called support and told them. They maintain your purchase info and control how many active downloads you have. They reset my download, which meant that all I had to do was download Roboform2go on another USB, and Roboform on my lost USB would be dead.

Because I also had roboform on another key, it was a simple matter to synchronize them to get the new one up to speed. I was up and running in about 10 minutes.

It is unlikely that a malicious person, who would know how to use my lost USB had found it, but if that had happened the only thing they could do, was to re-format the drive so they could use it for other things. My info was worthless to them. The support guy told me it would never be a problem as long as I used a password to protect my USB.

It was a good lesson for me, so I'm passing it along for anyone else who might benefit from my experience.

I'd prolly be inclined to carry the rf2g key on a lanyard around my neck.
    Near'n'dear.

Even though it *seem* unlikely that someone could break into your passwords...
don't underestimate the "enemy". I would change my passwords -- as much of a pain as that might be -- if I were you.

OTOH -- it's hard enough to get people to use different passwords for different accounts. The next level up in good password hygeine is to modify them periodically.

I'd probably carry it on a lanyard if I carried it often. The thing is, I rarely carry it anywhere, except on trips. On trips it is in my briefcase. On the day this happened, I had a whole lot going on, and I was a bit distracted. Otherwise, I would have put it in a different pocket from my keys.

As for underestimating the enemy, the odds make it extremely unlikely that the person who found it is the enemy. I think the guy from Roboform knows his program. I put all of my information on an un-activated USB and tried to hack into it without success.

This incident happened a little more than 3 weeks ago and nothing bad has come from it.

      Interesting experience!

Personally, I backup all data, including (encrypted) passwords to an external hard-drive and store remotely, e.g. trusted friend/relative.

Carrying data around is something I could not be bothered to do.
