About SSL. A question or two.

Hi All,

First of all I know nothing about SSL. Now....

If I buy an SSL Certificate is it good for any and all pages on a site including other directories and sub domains?

And if the above is yes is it good for add on domains as opposed to separately hosted URLs

Example in my resellers account I have the choice of having an unlimited number of separate accounts, one for each URL if I want or I can choose to make each and every one of my URLs an add on domain effectively making it a directory or subdomain under my main site.

This Question is probably foggy so I'll clarify it if needed.

George Wright, P.S. OK let me just spill the beans. Do I need a separate SSL on each page to block sidewiki or will one work site wide? P.S.S. Please No debate on sidewiki here. That's been done already.

    Good question.

    Default certs are specific to the default domain you indicate.

    That is, if you add www, you must always use www.

    If you want one that works with everything, www, non-www and sub domains, you need a wild card SSL cert.

    BlueSquares answered that for your George.. WildCard SSL Cert will cover sub domain and etc..

    If you want to be cheap you could pay $10 for a domain and get free SSL to use on any domain name and then only $20 a year - Namecheap.com - Cheap domain name registration, renewal and transfers - Free SSL Certificates - Web Hosting - Free URL Forwarding, e-mail forwarding and DNS services are included with our cheap domain names registration service this is if you have namecheap...

    Just to clarify, SSL certs are for a PARTICULAR domain on it's own IP address. I am unsure of how widely compatible wildcard certs are, but they are for 3rd level domain names, and NOTHING more! In other words, amazon could get one for amazon.com and it would work on Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more ww3.amazon.com, etc... But NOT one for amazon.com that would work for alexa.com. And ALL domain names must be on the SAME IP address.

    Any directory underneath the SAME domain is also handled seamlessly. The SSL cert check logic is triggered when it connects to the domain, and secures all communication in that window to that IP address.

    BASICALLY, you have to get a certificate request from the server it will be on, which MUST have IP based resolution(typing in the IP address with NO directory/user/etc... gets you to the SAME site. If you see ANOTHER site, you have NAME based resolution, and you must change your account setup to get SSL.), and send that to the company you buy the SSL cert from.

    ALSO, you COULD use the SSL cert for ANY domain name on that IP address, but they will all give you a warning, by default, if they don't exactly match that listed in the cert.

    Yes Steve is right an SSL is for only that domain and it must have it's own IP...
