Sick of working for the MAN.... MENTORSHIP wanted!

by resto72 53 replies
Dear Warriors,

Can anyone suggest a good mentor to follow? Looking to start on IM as I'm already fed up with corporate America. I know this is not going to be an easy task, but I'm sure is easier than having to get up every morning to go to work to a dead end job. Any tips/referrals will be greatly appreciated.

4 Hour Work Week book by Timothy Ferriss?
Yes, it's a good book, but it's not a right book to starts on IM business.

My Favorite mentor is Neil Patel, there are a lot of valuable articles he shared on the net about IM.

Can't have it both ways. If you want to quit "working for the man" then you have to start working - and thinking - for yourself. But don't get the idea that it's going to be any easier than what you're doing at the moment.

Maybe you're cut out for the entrepreneurial life, maybe you're not. But starting off by looking for someone to follow doesn't bode too well. You'd have more chance of success if you had a purpose and motivation greater than simply being fed up with your existing job.

Start thinking about what value you can bring to a market. Find something to get excited about. If you pick up a mentor down the line, all well and good, but saying goodbye to "corporate America" means saying hello to a whole lot more personal responsibility - and accountability - than you might have been used to.

Nothing wrong with working and thinking for my self. I know is not going to be easy, I'm not looking for that either. Brains need challenge and that is why I think IM is a good solution. Loads of stuff out there, just trying to get a little guidance.

No it's not going to be easier...those dead end jobs give you a steady pay check!

And quite frankly...When the great majority of people who get involved in this industry find out that there is quite a lot of work involved (in just launching an Online business not to mention...working for months on end before seeing any Profit) end running back to their dead end jobs.

If you truly understand what I just said and still feel strongly about your idea...keep your job, work part time to start and make sure to have a 'long term plan'.

The transition from an employee to Successful Internet Entrepreneur is not an easy task.

You've probably noticed that mentors can come in a lot of different shapes, forms and styles. Some mentor audiences through their blogs, email lists, FB groups, etc, without charge. Others do the same, but ask a fee and make membership to their program a "private" or closed group. Still others do mentoring on a more personal level either mentoring small groups or individuals one-on-one. So part of the mentoring decision you face is "how personal do you want to get with the mentor" and what kind of budget do you have for that expense?

Another consideration is the level of knowledge and experience you have in creating and running your own business. If you are experienced, you'll need to find a mentor that is more experienced. You're paying to learn things you don't already know so it would be good to do a self assessment of what skills or knowledge you lack so that you can choose a mentor that can help you in those areas. There are a lot of "aspiring" mentors here at the WF and you may already know more than that person about your market and business.

Maybe, most importantly, you need to seek out a mentor that has been successful in the marketplace and with the business model you hope to emulate. Mentors all have certain areas of expertise - they're not all good at every kind of business. Look for one that has mastered the kind of business you want to do yourself. If you plan to run a recurring income membership site, for example, find a mentor that knows the membership site model and business. If you're going to do affiliate marketing, find a successful super affiliate marketer that can teach you what he/she already knows. The saying holds true: "horses for courses." Get a mentor that excels at what you want to do.

Which brings up my last point: mentors are most helpful when the student client has a vision (goal, dream, plan, etc) of where he wants to go in his business. There is no sense at all in paying a mentor to teach you the very basic online business knowledge and foundation you need. You can learn that for free on your own at the WF, from books, course, and other places online. Mentors are best used to help you with specific challenges, skills, roadblocks, guidance, etc that you need in specialized day-to-day situations. That's where their practical knowledge and experience can best help you.

I hope these few ideas will help you to see how mentors can best be evaluated and utilized. Good luck in your new business journey.

Great feedback Steve, I really appreciate every second you spent writing your thoughts. Thank you so much.
I want to get into the affiliate marketing and expand from there. I've always had a gut feeling about this but been afraid to take the plunge. There is so much info out there that I don't know what info is the correct one. Especially when it comes to Search engine updates and what if the info I'm learning is already obsolete. I understand the very basics of Affiliate Marketing, I think I have a good niche that hasn't being exploited as much, but every time I start working on it I freeze because I don't know where to begin. Hence, I thought about asking for guidance from someone already on the field. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

You're going to receive a lot of pm's offering to mentor you for a price. Don't do it! Not yet, anyway.

Do your own research and at least find a direction you think you might have an interest in pursuing. Read and study everything you can about that business method.

Invest in some books and courses.

THEN consider hiring a coach or a mentor who excels in that area.

But as others have said, being an entrepreneur often requires moving forward on your own. The good news is you don't have a boss telling you what to do. The bad news is you don't have a boss telling you what to do.

I would advise you to do things your own way. Don’t read books and blogs of so-called mentors; they’ll suck your brain dry, one neuron at a time. YOU CAN ASK ME WHY? (a) 99% of these folks never built a real, authentic business; (b) their profiles, bios and about pages that bear little resemblance to reality.

You might be under the impression that a coach can guide you to your one true path to become the great whatever you’re destined to be. ITS A LOAD OF NONSENSE. WHY? The only true sources of wisdom, self-knowledge and perspective are experiencing the real world. So, my advise is seek your own path.

Let's get real here people. If reading forums and buying Wsos led people to success in IM then the failure rate would not be so high.

    And it IS freaking high

OP - forget about learning ANYTHING about IM unless it's about

    TRAFFIC

You read so much freaking stuff on forums about building a list, affiliate programs, WordPress, giving value. ... Yad yada yada this ain't star wars Yoda.

Cut the junk. 97% of IM failure has to do with not getting traffic and If forums had the answer people would fail less

Go learn how to get traffic any and everywhere you can then come back to IM in general.

Very solid advice here. If you can get steady, targeted traffic you'll be ahead of the game. After that, it comes down to providing value (staying relevant), making offers and continuously testing and tweaking.

When I build a sales funnel, there are three things I try to perfect:

      1. Targeted audience
      2. Landing page conversion
      3. One time offer sale

If you can send paid traffic to a landing page and follow that with a one time offer and just break even... every sale you make after that is pure profit and you're essentially getting scaleable traffic for free.

In order to be successful in IM you're going to have to change the way you think.

This is actually the most important thing.

There is a reason less than 3% of the people in the US retire with no financial worry. It's not because they had a higher paying 9 to 5.

    It's because they think differently.

You're absolutely correct that you need a mentor. If not, IM's learning curve will take years. Unless you just happen upon the keys.

Yes, there will be challenges. But, remember; their is no failure, only success and learning.

    Look for two things...

    1. A product or service that produces residual income. One off sales
are fun but it's just a different kind of job. Nothing compares to the leverage
of a recurring stream of income that flows with or without your attention.

    2. A mentor whose compensation is directly related to how much they
help you earn. Buying courses is for suckers. This isn't a slam on the
so-called gurus (hate that word). It's a simple fact that if you did everything
step by step that they write down in their course you still aren't likely to get
the results they got. There are a thousand variables that are impossible to
    anticipate when authoring a course.

You need the kind of personal attention that is only available from a mentor
whose compensation is directly tied to your results.

I know a whole bunch of them but none of them would

You have to understand the SYSTEM and then, choose that mentor you're looking for.

The ONLY profitable system which can be scalable, predictive and fondamental is EMAIL MARKETING.

    WHY?

Cause if you see every business over there, ask your mail, even whose pretend to teach you something different.

ONCE you have an EMAIL LIST you have an ASSET.

So, dont waste your time dabbing system to system, adsense, micro niche sites etc, and learn Email Marketing.

The system consists in these branches:

    1 Choose a profitable niche
2 Build a List of people interested in the solution you provide for that niche.
3 Nurture and Market that List.

But of course, these are concept where behind there's an entire world.

You have to go deep in these and never assume you know all. We're all students for the life, cause even we can teach something when we've tested and make it work, there's a whole world bigger to learn in advance.

So start with Learning how to make money with Email.

This should be permanently affixed to the top of every page of this forum.

If you learn how to drive targeted traffic then things like market and niche are unimportant (as long as there is money to be had).

I can have targeted traffic on virtually any web page, most times within a few hours of setting up the ads.

Tip: Protect your advertising accounts like they are Gold because they are. Don't be one of those people posting: I've been banned from FB. Bing, Adwords, etc. now what?

I'm a fan of Neil Patel. Follow him on Twitter to see a continuous stream of useful posts. Also check out Noah Kagan's podcast for great insights.

Two things I want to mention: First: don't just read do, make mistakes, try other things, do some more. Run small experiments. You can't spend theoretical dollars. Just get started.

Second: Don't think either or, think both. Make sure you continue to do your current work so you can pay your bills while getting your second income stream working. I know it can sometimes be a soul crushing experience working for "the man". Don't self sabotage, do your best at your current work while planning your escape.

Working for yourself is not all sweetness and light. Everything has its challenges. Try to find something you enjoy doing, don't just think about the money.

    Best,

I so hear you and agree with what Frank says. Finding something that motivates you, what you are passionate is what you need and don't just quit, but transition when the time is right.

You are in great place because in today's age it's far more easier to start an online business than ever before.

However you need to think where the puck is going as you are setting your business. You don't always want to work hard, right? Only know it needs to take place in the beginning, and later you will harvest. And if you do it smart, you will set it up so you reap multiple streams of passive income.

I started SEO late 90's when Google was just starting and made millions due to catching the wave.

Today we are in similar situation. The fact that we are on verge of great trends like IG taking off will allow you to get in and position yourself for maximum profits but you want to start now. Start building your nest now.

I personally went thru several programs and wasted thousands of dollars and still didn't get the education and training needed to get me going the right way. I didn't know anything about sales and marketing funnels and yes had gone thru Anik's email list building course too but it just didn't feel like the business I wanted to have.

Finally I found a marketing system that keeps me excited every day as I'm able to focus on things that I'm passionate about and offer products that change people's lives in both in health but also financially. And it's not a push sale which lot of products online are as they don't really offer the value and only exist for the compensation plan.

This system is great for beginners and offers step by step training for anyone just starting. Their video training, weekly masterminds and support are phenomenal and the community of likeminded positive individuals are amazing as you do want to have people around going the same direction and learning about things that work and don't work. No point re-creating the wheel.

I would like to also add that which ever mentor you choose to follow, make sure their vision is big enough for you to have long term business. Often it's just selling their product which then gets so saturated and conversions go down and you will struggle. They also often recommend using solo ads (crazy expensive) which is not how you build your business. You want to learn how to get targeted leads so you know who they are and can truly monetize your list later with great conversions.

My recommendation is for you to check out Vick Strizheus and Four Percent.

It's an online marketing, training and networking platform, a lifestyle brand for entrepreneurs. He's teaches the current trends, only provides industry leading education by the best of the best, and has an incredible vision for domination.

It's a movement to become the best of you in all areas of life by doing what you are passionate about. So you are not stuck on just selling a low ticket affiliate offers, pebbles, but have a portfolio of industry leading quality products with commissions to over $100K/deal. In most cases the income is passive and residual so all you need to do is bring in the person once and you get paid on all their purchases with no extra effort.

Hope this gave you some insight

    To your epic success!
    Cheers,
    Katja

The below are just some ideas to help you get the juices flowing - nothing about this journey is super simple or exceedingly easy - BUT that doesnt mean it needs to be overly complicated nor excruciatingly difficult - try to keep it simple and dont jump for shiny objects:

    A. Money Making Methods
    • Affiliate Marketing
    • Content Creation
    • Offline Marketing
    • Traffic/SEO/Sales Funnels
    Soft Skills/Hard Skills:
    - Communication
    - Follow Up
    - Writing Copy
    - Keyword Research
    - Content Creation
    - Content Marketing
    - Content Optimization (Sales/SEO)
    - Graphics/Web Design

With respect to content, there is a myriad of ways to create and market - obviously the most familiar ways are through website creation, article/post creation, driving traffic to the money site, and then adding/linking affiliate offers - this takes time, but the you are building a business, hopefully iterating, and creating lasting wealth this way

The above is an example - the money making methods and the soft/hard skills are very important.

Finding a passion, whether it is a niche you are passionate about, or discovering a skill that you are passionate about and developing that skill will go a long way in aiding in your success - for example if you decide that designing websites is your thing, you might stumble upon Adobe Muse, and learn how fun it is to use it, and you end up becoming proficient at web design through muse - eventually a number of different money making paths avail themselves to you (you develop websites for yourself, for customers, and you create wordpress themes through muse that you sell on wordpress theme marketplaces) and you end up being very happy because you find something that you are passionate about, you are making money at it, and you are your own boss.

If you are looking for free education on a variety of topics including but not limited to project management, coding, web design, sales marketing, content marketing, digital marketing, Look No Further than Coursera.org and EDx.org - these platforms offer courses at no cost to you (via the AUDIT A COURSE model) from some of the world's most prestigious universities, including MIT, Harvard, Wharton School of Business, etc. So no you dont need to purchase any WSOs or any College Credit Level Courses for that matter - check out the catalog for each of the platforms and find what interests you - you can bolster your knowledge base while growing your business or pursuing your IM methods this way as well.

As for finding a mentor to work with, you need to be diligent and cautious in your search as well. It helps speaking with folks who have been around the IM/MMO sphere for quite some time, as they have performed this research for you in many cases. The difficult part is vetting the good from the bad. I liken it to financial investment vehicle prospectus - "past performance is not an indication of future success;" this is the ultimate caveat emptor - there is no simple solution.

Reaching out and PM-ing folks who give resoundingly great advice for free to folks on the Warrior Forums/War Room is a good start - begin a conversation or two and get to networking - its a good idea to communicate with like-minded folks to start to put together a "mastermind" network of sorts - very few people make it online on their own - it takes time, you need some luck and some opportunity and the assistance of those who have been there and done that.

Bruce Lee had teachers and guidance as well (Yip Man was the most famous of his mentors).

That would be my advice and i wish you the best of luck.

ER, check this link out - this resonates with me in particular in that I like the gentleman in the link below have two children - the very first thing you need is something to motivate you and be the driving force behind what you aim to do - remember, motivation is fleeting, you need a drive, something to push and sustain you long term - Consistency is the key to any success - click the link and read through his story - this might not be the end all be all solution, but it will kick those gears into further motion and you might be able to derive some ideas/success patterns from his framework.

Hey there, welcome you to the journey.
There would have many up and down.
You're wise to find a mentor to follow.
I would not recommend some big names
as they are too famous to have time guiding
us step by step. Even when you buy their
courses, it is not 100% sure that you will make
it. I have learned tons of courses by spending
hours and hours and finally I can earn good money
for myself. I self studied. Actually it takes lots of time.
I am also finding myself a good mentor that
can stay along and answer any questions I
    have.
To narrow down you should pick one topic in
IM first as there are tons of ways. All are lucrative.
After that, you will find good mentor, courses
to follow but make sure you bear in mind the
key point: get closed to them.
Plus: if your goal is $10k per month, you should find
someone who has earned at least $50k. Or else,
it's harder to achieve your goal.
    Hope it help!

IM is a huge area and requires you to research areas in IM that offer the most potential for you. If you're considering the membership profit center for your concept, Ryan Lee from the Freedym site is an excellent start. Site provides great resources and case studies from successful IM Businesses. Good Luck.

here is advice after getting a few coaches myself:
there are some great people on this forum that will teach you.
MY ADVICE: BUILD A LIST AND THEN BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LIST, THEN MAKE MONEY FROM THE LIST. IT WORKS LIKE MAGIC, START TODAY, EVEN IF YOU GET 1 EMAIL A DAY. THE LIST WILL BUILD FAST.
    ===========================================
IF YOU SIGN UP WITH A COACH:
    1. ALWAYS INSIST THAT YOU USE PAYPAL YOU DO NOT GET SCAMMED
    2. ALWAYS INSIST THAT YOU PAY IN INSTALLMENTS, NEVER PAY FULL FEE UPFRONT WITH EVERYTHING IN LIFE .....NEVER .....NEVER
    3. ASK ALOT OF QUESTIONS

There are lot of good coaches around. You can find many in WF itself. You can check their WSO as well as other testimonials.

You also need to research yourself where you want to start i.e. there are lots of ways to earn money like CPA, Affiliate, List building ..... find your interest and according to your interest you can go for the coaches.
