Web Browser Push Notifications

Hey all,

Question from a site that is just starting out. My site just recently went live and I'm intrigued by the idea of utilizing web browser push notifications.

I've noticed them from time to time in the past, but hadn't considered the potential power of them until recently. Apps have found great success, conversion-wise, utilizing push notifications already, why not browsers?

I'm running them against a traditional email opt-in form, so I guess we'll see.

Anyone having any success with push notifications? If so, how are you utilizing them?

I can see the obvious value in pushing them out with new articles posting to a blog and running flash sales, but I'm guessing others have figured out even more creative uses for the notifications.

I think most people are annoyed by this, and tell the browser to never again allow it.

Same for a browser requesting your location.

There's a strong pushback again this these days.

It was only acceptable for most on the phones, and phone apps -- not web browsers (mobile or not).

The annoyance factor was definitely a thought, but is it any more than an email opt-in? Thanks for the feedback!

I check email on my own time. And I expect to see email when I check email.

Notifications in a browser are no different than pop-up ads. That's not why I'm there. It's one reason Google is taking a hard stance against annoyances using Javascript.

Valid point. But isn't there a counter-point out there to the degree that when I look at my phone lock screen, I'm generally checking to see the time (or texts, etc)? Yet I still opt in to a number of push notifications because, though they are at times an annoyance, I've found that they bring me enough value to warrant the annoyance.

Now, is this just a conditioning thing -- i.e. I'm so accustomed to push notifications on a phone that I no longer give it a second thought? I'm not sure myself, but it intrigues me. Largely because there was a time that push notifications did annoy me on my phone. But eventually I've succumbed and am reliant upon a number of them now. Will browser notifications ever take hold? Or are they just too obscure/annoying to change our browsing habits?

Personally, I've only opted in to three browser notifications at this point, because, as you've pointed out, I don't want the annoyance. However, the three that I have specifically opted in to have provided me enough value that any annoyance is worth it. I've been finding that I actually prefer the ability to just "x" out of the notification if I'm not interested, instead of having junk email build up that I may or may not ever get the time to look through.

I'm never annoyed to get a PUSH or email notification for something that I want.

Remember guys; if something seems annoying to you, it ain't annoying to folks who aren't annoyed by it LOL. I was annoyed by pop ups for years. Like a dingbat, I didn't use them. But then I realized people wanted what I offered, used pop ups and PUSH notifications to make it easy for them to get my content, and my email list doubled in the past 3 months....plus my PUSH list keeps growing steadily too.

        Cyber food for thought

I am growing my PUSH subs nicely.

I have strong posture though; most folks FEAR annoying folks or see things thru their own annoyed, afraid filters, but I know folks who want to gobble up my blogging content, and feel clear on this. So I add hundreds of subs to my PUSH subscriptions list in addition to my email list which grows pretty quickly too.
