Allen Says said something about spam that got me to thinking. Any thoughts on this?

Hi All,

A while back when Allen put up the announcement concerning the Warrior Forum going back to being a paid forum he commented on why he didn't just email the forum community.

He indicated in so many words that it was a spam issue.

I remember many moons ago on a Warrior forum with a different forum script than this one someone complained about an email from the forum. Allen simply commented on the fact that it was part of the TOS that the members would receive an occasional email.

I have always felt the same way. If people join a forum and part of the TOS is that they get an email from time to time can they charge SPAM and make it stick if they get emails from the forum Admin?

Just a side note, I get email all the time from other Forums I belong to. I vaguely remember checking the box giving permission for the emails. However, If "you agree to receive email" is in the TOS, is this good enough.

Of course one should never hold a member or former member hostage on their email list if the former member wants off. I'm not saying that. I'm speaking of current members in good standing who agree to the TOS.

Thanks,

George Wright

I am in complete SHOCK that I don't get more emails from this forum - which as I understand it is a MARKETING forum. LOL

TOS? Does anyone really read those things?

Probably not avenuegirl. However if they are displayed with a visible notice; "By continuing to use this site you are bound by our TOS." Are they binding? I see that on all different kinds of sites. Where the TOS are probably not read by all.

Here's what gets me - sites that change the TOS midstream and don't inform you that they've done so. Like I'm suppose to read it every time I log into the site.

For all I know, Allen could have added "by using this site, if you are a female you have now given up your first born to me after your 1,000th post."

Of course, this came after the part of the TOS that said "we declare the right to change these TOS at any time and any place and for any reason and it is the users responsibility to refer back here regularly or else"

I never even thought about the fact that I don't ever get email from this forum. Proof that content is king? I mean, Allen surely makes a very pretty penny from his ownership of this forum (and not nearly what he deserves!), and yet the "money is in the list" obviously doesn't apply for this business. Unless we extend that to include the forum membership 'list.' He gets people paying because the content here is unsurpassed. Food for thought, site builders.
