PLEASE...Save my baby!

Yes, the building is on fire and I need someone to help me save my baby.

I started this site just over a month ago and have gotten it to #8 in Google for it's keyword but now that I'm getting a little bit of traffic my bounce rate went from 45 to 83% with an on page time of 51 seconds. (even I can last longer than that.)

Please remember that this is my first attempt at a marketing site and even though I shouldn't be emotionally attached to it I have found that my ego is all wrapped up in this thing.

Here it goes....
LowerRight-BackPain dot Com
.(Sorry, not enough posts yet)

Thank you in advance for your advise.

P.S. There is no capture form on this page due to the fact I'm laid off and can't really afford the auto responder right this second. The links lead to an affiliate squeeze page that then sends me the opt-in info.

The site needs to engage your reader more. Break up the text - at the moment there is nothing that makes me even want to start reading - it's just a wall if words.

First impressions count. Make is EASY for people to see at a glance what your site is about. People don't want to read unless something engages them and makes them WANT to read.

The "back pain relief kit" is too wide for the sidebar. Widen the sidebar or use a theme with an adjustable side bar.

    Make a more interesting header.

Thank you Rosetrees. I'll work on breaking it up some. I think maybe some added white space, pics and bullets may help.

I'll play with the side bar. I'm not good at CSS and just a little intimidated.

I think so too. After the first picture it is only text until the very end. Maybe add some color in the middle in the form of picture or something else.

The site looks good, even though I didn't have the patience to read the whole article. Maybe because I am not the target audience.

I wasn't aware of mail chimp but will check them out asap.

Holy cow! I went to your site and I feel like I just knocked at someone's door and they opened it long enough to slap me in the face.

You need to look at your site from the viewpoint of the site visitor.

What do you want him to do first?

Right now, there are too many things going on, too many things to look at, too many things competing for my attention and slapping me in the face.

I agree about using MailChimp for your opt-in if a paid option is not available for you at this point. Having a site up without an opt-in is SUICIDAL for any type of business. Might as well not even put the site up.

There is no big, engaging headline to attract my attention and make me feel like I am in the right place. If I feel like I am in the right place, I want to keep reading.

One of your most powerful pieces of real estate on this site is not being used effectively. It's the top right corner. What's up there? A search box. What should be up there? Your opt-in box.

I barely noticed your "Free Back Pain Relief Kit." Had to scroll down to see it because part of it is under the fold.

This kit should be your ethical bribe. This kit is what you should give your site visitors in return for opting in. Don't just give it away. Make it clear to the visitor that when they opt-in, they will receive this kit. Build the kit up. Make it sound fabulous so your visitors will want it.

The copy on the page is long, without any breaks that encourage the eye to rest before continuing. It needs to flow, be more interesting, and have subheads.

Also, I think you are trying to cram too much information on this page.

    One word of advice:

Keep it simple to make people stay. Building a relationship with your customers sometimes comes with the first impression... in our case is the site where we put our info... tha is us.

    Hope you think of this.

Fall back on time-honoured formats. The main photo is attention-getting, and not bad. The blue and black strap lines to the right and below the photo are congested. Replace them.
Main Head 10 Words Max Two Lines Big Red Font
Strapline smaller font elaborates on what benefits the reader will get by reading further.

Break up text with graphics and Subheads In Bold

The reader should get a broad idea of what you're on about by skimming the subheads.

    Lose all the distractions.

I can't figure out what is the primary purpose of the page. Is it MFA or is it the free kit? If you want to get customers long term the free kit is great. Follow the advice posted in this thread to get opt-ins to the free kit. Set up a series of emails. Leave the visitor NO CHOICE but to opt in or hit the back button.

Thank you for all of your help. I will start revising and implement an opt in form immediately.

Part of the issue is that I wasn't looking for the "typical" sales page site but rather an informative, been there and here's how I can help with your problem blog almost.

I figured that the opt in form for the guides would be a viable substitute for an opt in form on my page since I do receive the email info when they opt in.

I think my site would be better served if I focus on giving away the free guide while building the relationship. I'm trying to do too much at once.

Does anyone have a site that is not a "sales page" site that understands what I'm going after and could show me as an example?

    Thank you very much again.

I think I would have a separate page where people could purchase your guides, with a box at the top, headline inside, saying "Take Any One of These FREE!"

Then, on your main page, make sure there's a prominent link at the top, in red, saying "Free to Download" or something similar, leading to that page.

Clean up your main page by giving it a better layout, little text on page one, and definitely add some more graphics. Go for a magazine look.

There's another free autoresponder at freeautobot.com, but you have to watch the results, as they may tack on their own ads.

How about using Mailman or something similar and setting up a response box in which they have to provide you with their email address, then set up an auto responder in your hosting to automatically send them the download link to the book you are giving away? Just Google 'opt in scripts'.

      The heading is better

Lose categories, archives and tags - there's only one article on there.
Lose Published articles - nobody cares, they've got backache - they've come for a cure, not for author recommendations

If you can't fit the relief kit into the sidebar, put it in the main body.

Design a more eye catching header.

Hey - why am I beating about the bush - get another theme. Try my favourite (I know, I know, I sound like a broken record) Atahualpa - totally flexible and you can adjust the width of the sidebar to accommodate that kit.

I am viewing your site in IE 8 & Firefox 3 on a 19 inch monitor. You have a horizontal scroll bar, which is a big no no! Try a container table set at 95%

Thank you so much for your advice. I can't seem to get the categories and archives out of the left side bar. I widened the right side bar to fit the kit but that is in my browser and screen. Is it not fitting in your view?

I put the atahualpa theme in my off line server and played with it a little bit. Thank you for the suggestion. I love the functionality of that theme. I bet I spent over an hour fiddling around and didn't even scratch the surface. Good Stuff!

The website need a good template as I always say to my clients. Invest in your site as it is a business not a good looking site.

So on your first profit start investing on it a nice logo that says what you are about. And a good template.

    Saw this headline:

Get Back Pain Relief Before You Finish Reading This!
The first thing that popped into my mind was, "Okay, I won't finish reading then."

You might be better off with something like:

"Does Your Back Hurt? Relieve Pain in the Time It Takes to Read This page..."

Your free offer has the word "free" in it three times. Seems excessive...

    Another thought about headlines/titles...

Do people really want to know how to make "7 back pain mistakes"? Seems to me, if they're looking for a cure, they're already pretty good at back pain; they don't want to know how to better make their back hurt by eliminating mistakes.

Lose the "More Helpful Articles" at the end of your page. You're only giving people more ways to exit your page without doing what you want them to do. If you want the links for quality score purposes, move the links down into the footer where they are less distracting.

[Side note: I'm guessing that both blogs and the glowing comment on the first one are yours. Am I right?]

I haven't even been able to force myself to wade into the mass of text. Use that crash course in CSS to at least add a little space between paragraphs. Right now, it looks like one long sentence.

Just some random observations when I visited, trying to look at it as someone seriously seeking information rather than as a marketer.

      Thanks JohnMcCabe

The "7 Back Pain Mistakes" is an affiliate product. Not mine. When back pain comes on unexpectedly the first thing we ask ourselves is what did I do wrong. Hence, we must be making a mistake. IMO

As far as the other blogs, No they aren't mine. The comment on the one is. And yes I put them there for track back purposes. What browser are you using? I put these in a page brake so all you should see is a link that say Read the rest of this entry. My attempt at not making them noticed. On my analytics overlay they haven't been clicked on.

For some reason WP won't let me double space between the damn paragraphs.

It wasn't in my CSS crash course syllabus. :p

I know that's how it was intended. Sometimes my mind pulls out some weird associations. When I see "the X mistakes of whatever", my first thought is to improve whatever. Like the 'do you make these mistakes in English' headline promotes a product to get better at using English.

I clicked on the 'read the rest' link to see what else was there. If you check your analytics tomorrow, you should see at least one click on each link. If you don't want people clicking on the 'read more' link, change the anchor text.

You can add more space between paragraphs by tweaking the padding on the < p > tag in the style sheet.
