I was approved about a month ago and since then I sold 12 shirts without spending a dime on Ads. I haven't seen much story here in WF so I am posting this to aware others and also to share best practices.

How did you sell your T-shirt before your account is approved for Merch?

You can not create designs before you are approved. Approval happens anywhere from a month to several months. Mine 4 months.

But of course you can be prepared by creating designs with Photoshop or other software and start uploading once you get your account.

In my opinion it works great. Some time ago I uploaded four
or five designs and forgot about them. Then a few weeks later
they send me $30. But it's drying out because I don't have time
    for Merch.

If you are a good designer with some nice ideas it may be
    money printer!

Yes some people are absolutely crushing it for no money on advertisement which means their profit is 100% profit. but there is a small catch here. They will deduct 30% of your earnings for tax if you are living outside of USA. Anyways I believe it is good money.

Many countries have tax treaties with the U.S. for a reduced tax rate.If you live in a country that does, you can apply for this reduced rate when filling out your W-8BEN form.See the link below for the countries and rates this applies to:

I registered in merch a few months ago on the recommendation of a friend ... I still await approval. Any special tactics to receive approval or should I just sit and wait?

It just takes some time... I am sure I did not get any notification
at all from amazon. About one o two months after I applied I tried
to login just for fun and the account was there.....

There is nothing you can do on your part. Just wait. As I said, mine took about 4 months. it can take more or less than that. I am sure they are getting hundreds of applications per day and sooner or later the market may saturate. Now they have reduced the daily upload limit from 5 to 2 (for lower tiers) which shows some type of limitations or saturation. Though there still is a space I believe.
