What Domain Should I Use?

G'day Warriors

I am in a bit of a dilema with my website, and I am hoping some of you might be able to provide me with some advice on what domain name I should be using.

My site is www.atrec.com.au . ATREC stands for Australian Thoroughbred Racing Employment Centre, and the site is basically a job listing website for the horse racing industry.

The site has been up and running for a few years now and is ranking well in google. The problem I have got however is that ATREC isn't really a descriptive word, so it is difficult to market the website, as you have to continually explain what it stands for.

Anyway, I have recently purchased another domain, which is www.racingjobs.com.au and I am trying to work out what domain name I should use.

On one hand, www.atrec.com.au is already established and some people are already aware of its branding, and it is a shorter domain name.

On the other hand though, www.racingjobs.com.au would be easier to market as it is self explanatory.

Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated, as www.racingjobs.com.au would be easier to market in the future, but is it going to undo all the work we have done for branding and working our way up in google rankings?

Cheers

Jake

Pick one and 301 redirect the other to it. A 301 redirect sends the message that the site has moved permanently to the new location. So, if you 301 redirect the atrec domain to racingjobs, any rankings you have built up should be passed along to the new domain. So, you shouldn't lose any ranking "juice."

You just have to decide whether the branding or the ease of marketing is more important to you.

You could always stick with the atrec domain you already have and keep the branding. Then, use the racingjobs domain in your marketing and just redirect the racingjobs domain to the atrec site.

That might be the best of both worlds. You can maintain your current branding while, at the same time, have a more marketable domain name.
