Can anyone simplify what 'Pinging' is?

Hey guys,

I've been trying to find out what 'Pinging' is lately, and haven't come across ANYTHING that really makes sense that is simple to understand. Can anyone provide a good, simple explanation with maybe an example and benefit of how it can be used?

Thank you!

"Pinging" is a term borrowed from sonar operations. In sonar, one vessel sends out a sound wave, or ping, and waits for the reflection of that ping off of something solid - usually another vessel or an obstacle. The word 'ping' describes the audible tone you hear when that sound wave resonates through a vessel. Think of a submarine movie like "Hunt for Red October".

The ping can also be used to communicate one's presence.

Which leads us to the online use.

Take Wordpress, for example. When you publish a post, WP sends a digital message to anyone on its ping list to signal that new content is available.

RSS directories, among other sites, have software beacons set up to listen for these digital pings. If the directory is on the ping list, WP will send it the ping, and it will know to come and check out the new post.

A Track Back is another form of ping. If I make a blog post referring to one of your posts, and I include the trackback address in my post, a comment may appear in your post alerting readers to the existence of my post.

The two main uses of pinging online are to alert interested parties of new content and to spread links to that new content for SEO purposes.

    Does that help?

Simple? It's like you tell ping sites that you have a new content.

    sport combustion/pinging

"spark-ignition internal combustion engines occurs when combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder starts off correctly in response to ignition by the spark plug, but one or more pockets of air/fuel mixture explode outside the envelope of the normal combustion front. The fuel-air charge is meant to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise time in the piston's stroke cycle. The peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The shock wave creates the characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and cylinder pressure increases dramatically. Effects of engine knocking range from inconsequential to completely destructive. It should not be confused with pre-ignition (or preignition), as they are two separate events."

I apologize. I cannot help it had a long day LOL

you can ping any site by going to your command prompt and typing in:

      example:
ping http://g oogle.com (edited on purpose)
and it will return a response from the site whether it says "reply from..." or timed out...
