Wikipedia for free traffic?

Has anyone used this as a way to get free traffic? Would it be possible to create a wikipedia page of yourself and your products? If this is possible it could be a good source of free traffic, as wikipedia gets good rankings.

Anyone who can share on this?

It's possible, but there are hoops to jump through.

Specifically, Wikipedia:Notability - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These "Notability" guidelines require the subject of an entry to be sufficiently... notable... and for that you need some form of authority/social proof in the form of
    (i) having been featured in the press
(ii) having written a mainstream-published book
    or similar

You can't just throw up the ol' self-promoting page. It ain't Facebook. (To my great disappointment.)

    Hope that helps.

PS - If (and only if) you have a site that's full of useful info and is not obviously aggressively selling something, you could always try adding a link to the "external links" section of a relevant existing entry. A good friend of mine uses this strategy - with a small twist - and he gets a lot of good traffic from it.

It's called spamming and would be deleted.

There are other more efficient and effective ways to drive traffic. Wikipedia is built as a source for information and just like tj mentioned, anything promotional would be deleted. They have tons of contributors watching and editing everything that happens.

You're better off writing quality articles or blog posts and spending your time and focus on those.

I've used this method for my comicnews website. Specifically when we've done interviews with creators and such. This method brought in some traffic but nothing to write home about. As the poster above me said, there are more effective ways to drive traffic.

Wikipedia is very difficult to use to get traffic - not impossible though. However, the moderators of some pages seem to delete nearly all external links however relevant they are. I think that you would have a hard job promoting an average IM site.

I have never used it but I have heard that the moderators are very strict about external links.

Yes, quite a few people have used Wikipedia. So many, in fact, that now the moderators are extra-suspicious about outbound links!
