Should it really be this difficult???!!! I have a Canon camcorder that creates its files in .mod format (god knows why!) I've tried several programs to convert these mod files into a usable format such as .avi or .mpg. Currently I'm using Tipard MOD Converter (recommended in the Camtasia forum). No matter what type of format I convert to, Camtasia gives me a Error: No Codec Available to render this file. Windows Media Player won't play the files either (sometimes I get just audio and no video, other formats won't play at all). I'm hoping someone here ran across this and found a solution. I can't imagine I'm the only poor sap with a Canon camera wanting to make the video usable. I submitted this problem to both Camtasia and Tipard support yesterday, but no response yet. SO FRUSTRATING!!! |

It was awhile ago that I had to check into this but from memory, the .mod was only used for a time by Canon and then dropped, so it did not become common or popular. I did spend a little time with google search and a couple of people had mentioned they could get them opened by changing the extension, but I can't remember what they changed it to. Then it turned out I didn't need to do the project so I didn't finish. Just in case that tiny bit of info helps. best wishes, lloyd |

Thanks for your help guys. Unfortunately, the answer wasn't in the Canon forum either. It still baffles me how this isn't a more common question. Anyone using a Canon or JVC camcorder and Camtasia MUST have had this problem. I figured out the answer by downloading one of Camtasia's video tutorials and seeing what encoder they used on their file. It's an MP4 format using an H.264 encoder. Not an .avi, like so many other web sources led me to believe I needed. Hopefully that helps anyone else who runs into this issue. |

Hi there, Probably i could help you out. Was working with a Canon camcorder last week and encountered the same problem. The turnaround that i used was. 1. Used a converter(cant remember the name already:free ones from the internet) to change it to mpg from mod. The result: Camtasia was giving me error so... 2. I simply changed the extension of .mpg to .avi and voila it works for Camtasia 6 (plays and renders in windows media player and shows in camtasia) Even though it worked for me, i threw the HD-Canon away and used a Disc operated Canon on my next attempt. The reason why is the HD-Canon shows a significant degrade of quality of the video when converted, compared to the Disc operated ones. You might want to know that Hopefully this works for you. |

I had the same problem after buying a brand new shiny JVC camcorder. What idiots.. what the heck is .MOD anyway! Anyways.. This is what I now have to do. 1. Create video with camcorder 2. Save to computer 3. Import .MOD video file into Ulead DVD Factory 4. Export immediately as movie/wmv 5. Import into Windows Movie Maker or Camtasia It adds on way more time for nothing.. I wasn't happy when I found about this silly .MOD file. |

MOD file format is used by various digital camcorder models (JVC Everio, Panasonic and Canon) to save their videos. These MOD files are often accompanied with small .MOI files which contain the videos' time-stamp information. MOD format is simply a MPEG-2 formatted video file, and if you simply wish to view the files on your computer, it is reportedly safe to rename the extension from MOD to MPG or AVI. Software that may help you a lot on video conversions is a HD Video Converter, which can easily convert JVC .MOD files without losing quality. Pavtube HD Video Converter has lived up to or exceeded my expectations. I really liked how your trial version provided full access to the functions of the software. It allowed me to test the conversion quality. I knew without a doubt that pavtube software will work for me, so I was not hesitant to purchase it at all. |
