Some people just don't realize how talented they truly are.

I made a thread yesterday about feedback when hiring a writer...Now let me turn to positive side of things.

Some writers write absolute gold yet they don't even know how good they truly are. I hired this girl a few days ago and asked her to write newsletter series for me.

I just gave her random directions on what I was looking for but she comes up with 10 newsletters 2000 words each. So that's about 20,000 words.

But here is the kicker- Her content was so good that it would truly blow anyone's mind away.

I mean you normally don't find such extensive research done by writers and delivered so perfectly.

I paid her $155 for those 10 newsletters and I have made a lot of money off it. Heck...Now I am planning to compile it into a 20,000 word report and sell it off to my list.

But you see...She doesn't realize how good she truly is...Similarly there are a lot of top notch writers out there who don't truly know how good they are.

It might be a good thing for people like me...Because I get great quality at a great price but at the end of the day...Imagine if these people knew what they truly were capable of doing? How much money they would truly make.

In that case I would be ashamed to pay her so little... under $.01 per word? She REALLY doesn't know how good she is then...

I don't think you are doing her any favors (or yourself, for that matter) by paying her so little. Even though she asked for $.007 a word, I would have paid her more. Heck, even at double that, you would have gotten an incredible bargain. Chances are, your good fortune will be quick lived as soon as she realizes what she is really worth.

No wonder talented writers eventually ending working for themselves. I used to love the praise and adulation and it took me years to realise that soem dosh would be great as well.

Yes that's true, but look at what you are bringing to the party:

You probably spent 100's of hours learning about, even spent money, to learn about internet marketing.

You've taken a risk there was no guarantee that all this investment in time and money would bring you any return.

You've paid for and set up hosting dealt with technical issues etc.

You've learned how to do keyword research, which you have carried out for this project. You have managed the project

You've taken a risk that this particular project will give you a return, it might not have done. You might have lost money.

You have submitted the articles to the appropriate places, and uploaded to your web site and formatted it appropriately.

You have put creative input in to come up with appropriate titles, and done market positioning and have found a ready a market.

You would have done other things too.

By all means thank her and pay her more, I probably would, but in a sense the actual writing of the article is the easiest most straightforward and risk free part of the process. It is the last piece of the process.

Seriously if she is so good and you made so much money why in the world would you not go back to her and thank her for all the work she has done? Maybe even pick her up again for more projects and pay her a bit more this time. Just saying

I didn't ask her to make every newsletter 2000 words...I was paying her the normal price...Yet she over delivered.

I gave her a tremendously big bonus...I shared with her all my secrets to making money online. And mentored her in complete detail.

Well...I mentored her and told her how it's possible to make $1000+ per day online by sharing some tricks. Now it's upon her how she uses.

The best response by far. Thanks a lot.

I shared all my secrets with her...But she can't believe it's even possible for her. I guess fear of success.

I started a thread (maybe it's in the old forum), title "Why Are You Such A Cheap *******", to discuss this very thing. It doesn't just apply to writers, but anyone you outsource to. Sooner or later those folks are going to figure out their worth and if you're not taking care of them now, you'll most likely lose out.

When someone really goes the extra mile and you make a fortune off their work, it never hurts to through them a bone. Yes, you already paid what was agreed, but obviously this person can help you again and again down the road. So, greasing their palms a bit will almost always ensure they make themselves available to you when you need them.

You'll find that if you surround yourself with talented people like this and genuinely take care of them, you can't fail
Well I tried my level best...Even set her up hosting, sites...In fact spoon fed her.

I can never understand why people say it's unfair of a buyer to pay a writer what they asked for. Since when is it the buyer's responsibility to make sure the writer gets paid what they are worth?

I am a writer so this is not coming from someone only looking for undervalued work. I just feel that it's up to me to ask for the amount of money that I want to get for my work.

Well thanks a lot. But I guess it's my fault for not mentioning what I did for her. But then again...I didn't think people would even ask about it. Because I thought this topic was more about people with tremendous potential not truly knowing what they're worth.

ryanman, it sounds like she's not interested in becoming a marketer herself. In that case, the best reward you can give her is more work. Through hiring her again yourself, and through referrals. If she's looking for more writing work, and you don't have enough to keep her busy, feel free to shoot me a PM.

I agree. It is not that he scammed her or didn't pay her. There was a certain value agreed upon by the two parties and when they both are satisfied, I just don't understand the fuss about not paying more.

There is also the reverse situation when you do charge what you
are worth and your client didn't recover your fees in their marketing
efforts. Should the writer feel 'bad' about this or is it the marketer's
responsibility to use the writings properly?

In the end people have to learn what their skills are worth. And
sometimes you learn the hard way--I have. I've done work for
people who profited 1000X from what I charged, but they never
    paid me a bonus.

    good points, folks.

You could she her my way, a good writer is worth their weight in gold. I have worked with some writers whose grammar made my head hurt, not to mention their punctuation or lack thereof. On the flip side, when you get those few who have mastered the English language and can grasp your emotions with their pen that is an expense well worth it.
